TEMPE — Arizona Cardinals rookie running back Jeremiyah Love is dealing with a high ankle sprain and likely won’t play again this preseason, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Schefter adds the team is hoping Love will be ready to go for the regular season opener against the Los Angeles Chargers.
The update comes after head coach Mike LaFleur did not give any details on the injury when asked about specifics on Sunday.
Love is coming off 14 touches (11 carries and three catches) for 72 yards in his preseason debut Thursday night against the Las Vegas Raiders.
He was rolled up on during his final touch of the game. LaFleur on Saturday said the running back was being held out after experiencing more soreness than anticipated.
Would Jeremiyah Love have played again this preseason if healthy?
Love was likely headed for an out status the rest of the preseason before the latest report.
Even if the rookie was healthy, seeing him (and the majority of the starters) at any point the rest of the preseason may not have been part of the plans.
“Not to share too many secrets because I haven’t said it with the players yet but knowing that it was about what it was going to be in terms of how many games these guys were going to play for what we’re looking for,” LaFleur said. “That’s what the thought was (behind Love’s double-digit touches).”
