Cowboys Just Landed an NFL Legend One-Year Deal (Report) 1
August 16, 2026 NFL, Dallas Cowboys
Von Miller closed out the 2025 season quietly leading a playoff push in Washington, then spent this summer publicly campaigning for a shot at going home. The Cowboys wrapped their preseason opener against Seattle over the weekend, still hunting for answers on the edge. Sunday night, that search and Miller’s lobbying finally crossed paths in a way fans have waited years to see.
Von Miller Signs One-Year Deal With the Cowboys
The Dallas Cowboys and free agent edge rusher Von Miller agreed to terms on a one-year contract on August 16, according to multiple reports. The deal ends a storyline that has followed Miller and the Cowboys since 2022, when he first said publicly he wanted to sign in Dallas for a hometown discount before Buffalo’s offer pulled him away.
Dallas was not the only team in the mix. As free agency dragged on, one NFL insider was pushing for the Eagles to make a run at Miller, pointing to Philadelphia’s need for edge depth. In the end, the hometown pitch won out.

Miller, 37, grew up in DeSoto, a suburb just south of Dallas, and starred at Texas A&M before Denver took him second overall in the 2011 draft. He enters his 16th NFL season as one of the most productive pass rushers of his era and is still considered the active leader in career sacks.
Last season with Washington, Miller led the Commanders with 9.0 sacks and 6 tackles for loss, his best output since 2018. He now slots into a retooled Dallas pass rush that added Rashan Gary in a trade this offseason and used a first round pick on Caleb Downs to shore up the back end, giving Miller a rotational, veteran role rather than a full time job.
Von Miller From Broncos Talk to a Dallas Homecoming
Just months ago, Miller was telling reporters he wanted to finish his career in Denver, saying he wanted closure with the Broncos before he walked away. Dallas changed those plans in a hurry.
The hometown pull mattered, but so did fit. Miller joins a defense still hearing warnings from franchise legend Emmitt Smith about the Cowboys’ long Super Bowl drought, and a front office that just reworked Kenny Clark’s contract to keep its interior line intact.
Miller has never lacked confidence about what he can still do off the edge. Miller once joked, “I can roll out of bed and get 5 sacks.”
That kind of self-belief is exactly what Dallas is banking on this fall.
For now, Miller heads into training camp working toward that rotational role. The Cowboys return to the field Saturday, August 22, on the road against the Arizona Cardinals, their next chance to shape the defense before the regular season opens.
