On this day in 1964, Liverpool embarked on their maiden voyage into European competition with a commanding 5-0 victory over KR Reykjavik in a European Cup Preliminary Round tie. This match marked Liverpool’s first foray into European football, setting the stage for their future successes on the continent. The journey to Iceland was a memorable one, as it took place in an era before clubs routinely chartered aircraft for European away matches. The team travelled from Liverpool to London, then from London to Prestwick in Scotland. With some time to spare, manager Bill Shankly took the opportunity to show his players the area where he grew up, including a visit to the Butlins holiday camp. The journey continued with a flight from Prestwick to Iceland, culminating in a resounding victory that would be remembered as the beginning of Liverpool’s illustrious European history.

Fast forward to 1991, and Barnet were making their debut in the Football League after securing automatic promotion by winning the GM Vauxhall Conference in the 1990/91 season. Their first match in the Football League was a thrilling encounter, albeit ending in a 4-7 defeat at home to Crewe. This high-scoring affair was just the beginning of an eventful start to their league campaign. Just three days later, Barnet played out a remarkable 5-5 draw with Brentford in the League Cup, also at their home ground, Underhill. Despite the initial setbacks, Barnet soon found their footing, securing a 6-0 victory over Lincoln in the Fourth Division. They went on to finish the season in a respectable seventh position, marking a successful introduction to league football.
