Everton handed transfer boost as Moyes-favoured target‘could’ still arrive

Everton’s pursuit of a Bournemouth midfielder has fresh legs, despite the south coast club’s public resistance.

David Moyes remains keen on Marcus Tavernier and believes a deal can still be struck before the window shuts, even though Bournemouth are reluctant to let their captain leave this summer. Everton opened dialogue with Tavernier’s camp earlier this month, but have yet to test Bournemouth’s resolve with a formal bid.

According to Football Insider, Moyes sees the 27-year-old as a perfect fit for his squad plans and is aiming to get a deal over the line before the new season gets going in earnest.

The report cites former West Ham scout Mick Brown, who worked under Moyes, as saying Tavernier would settle quickly at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

It’s a claim that belies the mood from the Cherries’ end. Bournemouth had made clear only days earlier that they’re doing everything possible to keep hold of Tavernier and have no intention of encouraging Everton to test the water, with the club keen to hand new boss Marco Rose as strong a squad as possible for his first Premier League season.

Tavernier is contracted at Bournemouth until 2029 and would command a significant fee after a career-best campaign — eight goals and four assists in 35 appearances across all competitions.

Wide areas remain a stated priority for Moyes as the window enters its final fortnight, with Tavernier one of several names on the list following Everton’s swap deal for Brennan Johnson. [Everton’s live transfer tracker: internal link placeholder]
