Newcastle United player ratings: 5/10 must 'get on the weights' as Matthias Jaissle given…

Here are your Gazette player ratings after Newcastle United lost on penalties to Ligue 1 club Strasbourg.

Strasbourg earned a penalty shoot-out victory over Newcastle United to leave Matthias Jaissle’s men stumbling into the new Premier League season.

Will Osula - who could have enjoyed a hat-trick - gave the Magpies a half-time lead. However, Newcastle did not look comfortable and a better team would have likely punished their defensive frailties.

Gessime Yassine found the top corner midway through the second half to earn the visitors a well-earned draw. Jaissle’s men ultimately lost the Visit Malta Cup for the second day in a row - this time via penalties. Here are your Gazette player ratings.

Ewen Jaouen - 7

One thing that stuck out as a positive is his kicking ability. Not much he could do about the Strasbourg goal. The penalty saves boosted him a mark.

Leo Shahar - 6

Linked up well with Murphy on the right. Has looked solid and dependable throughout pre-season.

Fabian Schar - 6

Played the opening 45 minutes as he recovered from a groin injury.

Dan Burn - 6

One dodgy moment but a solid enough first outing as skipper. Hooked at half-time as he works his way to full fitness.

Dylan Charlton - 5

Struggled to cope with the Strasbourg widemen.

Jacob Ramsey - 6

Neat and tidy in midfield. Composed without ever being truly threatening. Needs to do more. Partially at fault for Strasbourg’s goal and a terrible penalty in the shoot-out.

Aladji Bamba - 5

One moment he looks quality, the next poor. Lacking consistency but that is to be expected at his age. Anonymous in the second half.

Joe Willock - 7

Had a good game in the No.10 role. Put himself in the frame for Liverpool next week - providing his injury is nothing serious.

Jacob Murphy - 7

Has one killer trick in his arsenal. It worked a treat for Newcastle’s opener.

Bazoumana Toure - 5

The new wideman has impressed in pre-season but was not at the races today. Needs to hit the weights.

Will Osula - 6

Scored the opener and was lively throughout. Needs to hone his killer instinct. A more natural goalscorer could have enjoyed a hat-trick today. Still waiting for his spot-kick to land.

Subs:

Miodrag Pivas - 6

Looks a lot better at the heart of defence.

Henry Johnson - 6

Another solid display. Could be one to watch for the under-21s this season.

Played on the right for the closing stages.
