Piero Hincapie has gone viral for an accidental snub during Arsenal’s Community Shield medal ceremony. The Ecuadorian defender appeared not to notice FA Chairwoman Debbie Hewitt’s outstretched hand as he collected his winners’ medal following the 3-0 victory over Manchester City.
Hincapie, who came on for Riccardo Calafiori in the 60th minute at the Principality Stadium, walked past Hewitt without shaking her hand. Team-mate Martin Zubimendi was left in stitches by the moment and immediately apologised, making sure to shake the chairwoman’s hand himself before taking his own medal.

Footage of the exchange spread quickly online. One supporter commented that Piero Hincapie “was legit mesmerised by the medal” and simply did not see the hand, while others praised Zubimendi for his quick and polite response.
The incident provided a light-hearted footnote to an impressive performance from Arsenal, who laid down an early marker for the season with a dominant display against the FA Cup holders. Hincapie’s contribution off the bench formed part of a strong team effort.
Supporters will smile at the viral moment while focusing on the result. The Community Shield triumph offers positive momentum heading into the Premier League title defence. Further reflections on the win and the remaining transfer window will follow in the coming days.
