Arsenal will begin their Premier League title defence without William Saliba and Jurrien Timber. Both defenders are recovering from injuries and are not expected to be available for the early stages of the campaign.
Saliba is facing an extended period on the sidelines after aggravating a long-standing back problem during France’s World Cup semi-final. Arsenal confirmed in July that surgery is not recommended and that the centre-back has begun a managed recovery programme at the club’s training ground.
A club statement said: “Specialist reviews on William’s return to London this week have confirmed that he has suffered a back injury which will require a period of rehabilitation. Extensive assessments have concluded that surgery is not recommended, but William should now commence a managed recovery programme. William’s rehabilitation will commence immediately, with continual management of his injury, and he is expected to be out of action for an extended period.”

His potential return is currently pencilled in for winter 2026.
Timber is progressing well after minor groin surgery in the summer but remains weeks away from a return. He missed most of the final two months of last season before featuring as a substitute in the Champions League final and was subsequently ruled out of the World Cup.
Mikel Arteta’s most recent update stated: “Jurrien is progressing really well. He’s on the pitch, he’s doing quite a lot right now. But he’s still weeks away. I cannot tell you much.”
A return in September or is the current expectation for the Dutchman.
Cristhian Mosquera and Ben White filled the gaps in the Community Shield and are likely to feature heavily in the opening fixtures.
