Riccardo Calafiori may have made Mikel Arteta’s left-back decision considerably harder after taking just 23 seconds to score in Arsenal’s 3-0 Community Shield victory over Manchester City.
Myles Lewis-Skelly sliced City open with an excellent early pass before Calafiori charged forward and calmly finished beyond Gianluigi Donnarumma.
It was the fastest Community Shield goal for 58 years and immediately demonstrated the quality which separates Calafiori from Arsenal’s other options on the left. Reuters confirmed the Italian’s extraordinary early opener, which set Mikel Arteta’s side on their way to another trophy.
But the bigger Arsenal question comes from what happened behind him.

Riccardo Calafiori puts pressure on Piero Hincapie
Piero Hincapié developed into one of Arsenal’s most dependable players last season.
The Ecuador international initially joined from Bayer Leverkusen before his move was made permanent in a deal worth around £45m, and his defensive reliability eventually gave Arteta a genuine alternative to Calafiori.
The two players, however, offer very different versions of left-back.
ReadArsenal’s analysis of Arteta’s tactical evolution identified Calafiori’s ability to move forward as one of the elements that makes Arsenal considerably more threatening.
Hincapié is naturally more cautious. Calafiori wants to travel into midfield, overlap and appear in areas normally occupied by Arsenal’s attackers.
Against City, that freedom resulted in a goal before a minute had even been played.
It therefore becomes difficult to view Sunday as merely an eye-catching individual moment.
Arsenal’s left-back choice could change how Arteta attacks
Arteta has previously acknowledged that the pair give him different tactical possibilities.
Calafiori’s attacking instincts can help Arsenal overwhelm sides when they are expected to dominate possession, while Hincapié gives the champions greater protection when controlling transitions becomes the priority.
ReadArsenal ranked Hincapié as Arsenal’s best signing from the previous summer, while also identifying Calafiori as one of the club’s most improved players.
That is exactly why Arteta’s decision is so interesting.
Neither player needs to have performed badly for the other to take his place.
Calafiori simply gives Arsenal something Hincapié cannot replicate as naturally.
Calafiori may have made himself impossible to drop
Sunday was another demonstration of that difference.
Calafiori did his defensive work as Arsenal kept a clean sheet, but he also continually looked for opportunities to advance beyond the City midfield.
His goal was the extreme example.
Arsenal’s left-back effectively became an attacker within seconds of kick-off, exploiting the space created by Lewis-Skelly and giving City another runner they failed to track. Arsenal ultimately won 3-0 through Calafiori, Kai Havertz and Martin Ødegaard.
Hincapié remains extremely valuable, particularly during a season in which Arteta will need to rotate across four competitions.
But when Arsenal face Coventry City in their Premier League opener, the question is no longer simply whether Calafiori is fit enough to start.
After taking only 23 seconds to demonstrate exactly what he changes in Arteta’s system, the harder question may be how Arteta can leave him out.
