Myles Lewis-Skelly may have given Arsenal a compelling reason to reconsider a potential £51million move for Jack Hinshelwood after starring in midfield against Manchester City.
The 19-year-old started centrally in Sunday’s Community Shield and helped Arsenal overwhelm City on their way to a 3-0 victory in Cardiff.
His influence was immediate.
Lewis-Skelly produced the incisive pass that released Riccardo Calafiori for Arsenal’s extraordinary opening goal inside the first half-minute, while his aggression and composure helped Mikel Arteta’s side control the middle of the pitch.
Reuters highlighted Lewis-Skelly’s midfield role and assist as Arsenal looked fitter, sharper and more confident than City.
But his performance could have consequences beyond one trophy.

Myles Lewis-Skelly gives Arsenal £51m transfer question
Arsenal have been pursuing Brighton midfielder Jack Hinshelwood.
SunSport report that Arsenal have contacted the England Under-21 international’s representatives and are preparing an offer, with Brighton potentially willing to do business for between £43m and £51m.
Hinshelwood’s attraction is obvious.
He can operate centrally, as a holding midfielder and at both full-back positions. That versatility fits Arteta’s preference for players capable of performing several roles.
Lewis-Skelly offers something remarkably similar.
He originally established himself in Arsenal’s senior team at left-back, but central midfield has always been his natural position.
ReadArsenal previously argued Arsenal should think twice before buying another midfielder because of Lewis-Skelly’s emergence.
Sunday made that argument considerably stronger.
Arsenal transfer plans could change again
There is another layer to the decision.
Lewis-Skelly himself had been available this summer.
The Guardian reported that Arsenal had offered the youngster to Manchester United, with Chelsea also informed of his availability and a potential valuation of around £45m.
That created the possibility of Arsenal selling one versatile academy graduate before investing heavily in another versatile young English player.
It now looks considerably harder to justify.
Arteta has already changed Lewis-Skelly’s role once. ReadArsenal examined how tactical adjustments initially restricted his opportunities before the youngster eventually forced his way back into midfield.
Against City, he looked like he belonged there.
Arteta now has an enviable midfield problem
Arsenal are hardly short of central options.
Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi and Bruno Guimaraes provide elite senior depth, while Martin Odegaard remains captain and Lewis-Skelly offers qualities that differ from all four.
Hinshelwood would still strengthen the squad and his ability to cover multiple defensive positions remains attractive.
But spending up to £51m becomes harder to view as essential if Lewis-Skelly can reproduce Sunday’s level regularly.
That is the real significance of Cardiff.
Lewis-Skelly did more than help Arsenal win another trophy. He may have just forced the club to reconsider whether one of their biggest remaining summer transfer targets is needed at all.
