Jeremy Jacquet produced a memorable performance on his unofficial Liverpool debut, and new comments from a tactical analyst about him can only bode well.
The Reds finished their pre-season with a 2-0 victory at home to Cesc Fabregas’ Como on Sunday evening, with Cody Gakpo and Jacquet scoring the goals.
Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola was clearly pleased with his side’s efforts, not least new centre-back signings Jacquet and Ronald Araujo, who both caught the eye on the day:
“Yes, both of them. I think Jeremy played really well. Also Ronald played really well when he came in. When you have two new faces, first game for both, they do so well. It was also a very good performance of Jeremie Frimpong, playing 90 minutes as a right-back, helping us offensively but closing very well his side also. So, some good performances at the back.”
For Jacquet, it was a game to treasure, not only because of scoring on his first Anfield appearance, but also due to the immaculate defensive display he produced.
Writing on X, The Overlap analyst and host of The Overlap Breakdown show, known as @htomufc on X, lauded the Frenchman in response to fellow praise from tactics guru Josh Williams:
“Said this multiple times, seriously think Jacquet is one of if not the best prospect in his position. When I watched him I saw a genuine freak at work.”

Is Jeremy Jacquet Liverpool’s next defensive gem?
It is only one game, so an overreaction should be avoided, but it was hard not to be hugely encouraged by Jacquet’s performance against Como, showing why he is so highly regarded.
The 21-year-old looked like a complete centre-back, producing quality on the ball but also pace and positional sense when called into action defensively.
On this evidence, Jacquet looks a colossal signing with his best years still well ahead of him, not to mention being a potential upgrade on Ibrahima Konate over time.
In Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni, Liverpool have two special young defenders in their ranks, suggesting the Reds are in good hands once Virgil van Dijk eventually moves on, which hopefully still isn’t for a few years.
