Arsenal’s 3-0 Community Shield demolition of Manchester City offered an early glimpse of the advantage Mikel Arteta could carry into the Premier League title defence: continuity.
Riccardo Calafiori needed only 23 seconds to put Arsenal ahead in Cardiff before Kai Havertz and Martin Odegaard completed an emphatic victory over the FA Cup holders. Christos Tzolis provided two assists as the champions looked sharper and more settled than City throughout.
Arsenal’s 3-0 win over Manchester City will not decide where the Premier League trophy finishes next May.
It did, however, underline one major difference between two likely title contenders.

Arsenal vs Man City showed Arteta’s continuity advantage
City began the afternoon with Enzo Maresca taking charge of his first competitive fixture since replacing Pep Guardiola.
Arsenal arrived with Arteta preparing for his seventh full season and a group which already understands exactly how he wants to play.
That contrast was visible almost immediately.
Calafiori’s opening goal came from Myles Lewis-Skelly recognising space and releasing the Italian as he charged beyond City’s midfield. It was an aggressive movement from a defender, but one Arsenal’s structure allowed without losing its shape.
Havertz’s second demonstrated another established relationship. Christos Tzolis helped create the goal before the Germany international finished an attack built around movement Arsenal have spent years refining.
Tzolis is a summer arrival, yet he has entered a functioning system rather than one being rebuilt from scratch.
That distinction could become significant.
Arsenal are defending a finished idea
Arsenal’s challenge has changed after winning the Premier League last season.
Arteta no longer needs to prove his project can produce a title-winning side. His task is improving one which already exists.
Reuters highlighted that Arsenal enter the new campaign with unusual managerial stability at a time when several rivals have changed coaches, with Arteta now the Premier League’s longest-serving manager.
City are experiencing the opposite.
Maresca has inherited enormous quality, but replacing Guardiola inevitably brings different tactical demands, relationships and selection decisions. The City manager admitted after Sunday’s defeat that his side have work to do.
Arsenal exploited that uncertainty ruthlessly.
Arteta has another weapon he did not have last season
Continuity alone would not be enough if Arsenal had stood still.
They have not.
Tzolis has already added another creative threat and was involved throughout Sunday’s victory. The Greek international supplied two assists and drew praise from Arteta after another encouraging performance following his £34million summer move.
The increased competition is already creating difficult decisions.
Arteta was forced to leave Ethan Nwaneri, Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus outside his Community Shield squad, something he subsequently admitted left him “really sad”. ReadArsenal covered Arteta’s explanation after the victory.
That gives Arsenal an intriguing combination.
The structure is established, the dressing room knows how to win the Premier League and new players are being added without requiring Arteta to rebuild the foundations.
Community Shield sends early title warning
A Community Shield victory should not be treated as a title prediction.
Five days before Arsenal begin their league campaign against Coventry City, however, beating one of their biggest rivals 3-0 is considerably more valuable than another pre-season friendly.
Arteta said afterwards that the performance represented the standard and desire he expects from his players as they attempt to defend the crown.
City can strengthen before the transfer window closes.
So can Arsenal.
But Sunday demonstrated the one advantage neither club can purchase before deadline day.
