Manchester City’s pursuit of Enzo Fernandez has been handed a major new twist after the club accepted a £65.4million offer from Barcelona for Rodri.
The Spain international is now expected to complete his move to the Camp Nou, leaving City without one of the most important midfielders of their recent era.
For Chelsea, the timing immediately brings Fernandez back into focus.
Fabrizio Romano has already said he expects fresh Manchester City contacts next week as they try to find a way to sign the Argentina international.
Rodri’s departure has now made their need considerably more urgent.

Rodri exit changes Enzo Fernandez picture
The Guardian reports that Manchester City still retain an interest in Fernandez, despite Chelsea’s earlier attempt to draw a line under the situation.
Chelsea placed a £120m valuation on the midfielder and wanted interested clubs to meet their terms before Friday’s internal cut-off.
City did not.
Romano’s latest update, however, suggests they are preparing to return to the conversation.
Rodri leaving for £65.4m gives City another significant transfer receipt, although the numbers also illustrate just how difficult Chelsea’s stance remains.
Even if the entire Rodri fee were theoretically put towards Fernandez, City would still be around £54.6m short of Chelsea’s £120m valuation.
That gap gives the Blues considerable leverage.
Chelsea can force Man City into huge decision
Chelsea do not need to lower their demands.
Fernandez remains under a long-term contract and Xabi Alonso can comfortably plan with the World Cup winner if City refuse to pay what Chelsea want.
ReadChelsea previously looked at how Manchester City’s midfield moves could decide Fernandez’s future.
The picture has now changed dramatically.
Rodri is no longer simply considering an exit. Manchester City have accepted Barcelona’s offer, according to both Reuters and The Guardian.
Chelsea’s wider summer reshaping is continuing too, with Benoit Badiashile moving towards a Napoli medical as Xabi Alonso trims his squad.
Fernandez would be a completely different level of decision.
Selling him for £120m would provide Chelsea with another enormous transfer receipt, but it would also remove one of Alonso’s most established midfielders just days before the Premier League campaign begins.
Manchester City now have a £55m Enzo problem
Rodri’s sale makes City’s interest easier to understand.
It does not make Fernandez cheaper.
Chelsea have spent the summer showing they are prepared to place aggressive valuations on important players rather than sanction exits simply because another major club comes calling.
City must now decide how badly they want Fernandez.
Rodri’s £65.4m departure has blown the transfer saga back open.
Chelsea’s £120m price still leaves Manchester City with a gap of almost £55m to bridge.
