Lucas Clarke has signed his first professional contract with Liverpool. The teenage defender decided to sign the deal ahead of the next season.
Clarke to cement his position at Anfield
Clarke has decided to expand his career with Liverpool further. The 17-year-old defender has signed an official deal with the Reds for his senior career. This is his first professional deal with the club ahead of the 2026-27 season. He joined Liverpool in January 2025, after showing his skills at Manchester City‘s youth academy. He made his U19 debut for the Reds by July 2025. He also represented Liverpool during the UEFA Youth League held last year.
Clarke is not the youth player signed by the Reds for the next season. 16-year-old winger Josh Abe turned down multiple offers from rival clubs to sign a long-term deal with Liverpool for the 2026-27 season. He signed a scholarship contract last month. When he turns 17 by 2027, he can go ahead for a senior contract.
Will Clarke be a good fit at Liverpool?
Liverpool are undergoing a serious overhaul. They didn’t do well last season, particularly in the Premier League. They barely managed to qualify for the Champions League by finishing fifth in the 2025-26 League table. For new manager Andoni Iraola, bringing the glory back for the Reds will be a daunting task. He knows that it’s not a cakewalk to win back the League title.
How will Clarke help with his entry? He is brilliant as a defender, and has proved his mettle during the Youth League last year. Although Liverpool couldn’t make it beyond the Round of 32, Clarke’s individual performance didn’t go unnoticed. If he proves his mettle at the senior stage, he could join the main team within no time.
Apart from Clarke, the Reds are also investing heavily on other promising youth players. They completed a deal with Colombian sensation Samuel Martinez in July 2026. However, he won’t be making his big debut until the 2027-28 season.

Future gameplan for Lucas Clarke?
Clarke is currently warming up for the next season. He has a relatively clean record in terms of discipline as well as fitness concerns, and wishes to extend the same legacy to his career. He knows very well that he won’t get such a golden opportunity again.
Clarke hasn’t received a call from England’s senior team yet. That was the reason why he didn’t make it to the Three Lions squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. However, Clarke is not disappointed at all. He knows that he has a lot of time at hand. He wants to make a name for himself in club **football**first.
Liverpool has experienced a lot in the 2025-26 season. Apart from the not so impressive season, there were reports of alleged friction between the team management as well as the players. Just a year after winning the Premier League title, the Reds couldn’t even make it to the top three of any major European tournament. That was the major reason behind Arne Slot being replaced by Andoni Iraola for the upcoming season. Iraola knows that he cannot afford a similar situation for either himself or the Reds the next season.
It will be interesting to see how Lucas Clarke fits into the main team for the Reds this summer. If he proves himself at the U20 stage or above, it wouldn’t take long for the management to include him in the senior team. He could take some inspiration from Man United player JJ Gabriel, who became one of the youngest players to represent the team in a pre-season friendly this August.
