Chelsea face shock Josh Acheampong U-turn as Lampard plots raid

Chelsea could be heading towards a major Josh Acheampong transfer U-turn as club legend Frank Lampard looks to take the defender to Coventry City.

The Blues rejected multiple approaches for Acheampong earlier this summer and regarded the academy graduate as “untouchable” under Xabi Alonso. However, talkSPORT now reports Chelsea could consider either a temporary or permanent move for the 20-year-old.

Lampard wants Premier League experience after guiding Coventry back to the top flight, and Acheampong has emerged as a potential defensive reinforcement.

For Chelsea, though, sanctioning another exit would create a much bigger question.

Josh Acheampong Chelsea transfer stance has changed dramatically

Chelsea’s position appeared unequivocal in June.

Multiple approaches were rejected, with Acheampong placed in the same untouchable category as some of the club’s most important young players. He remains contracted until 2029 after progressing through the academy from Under-8 level.

Allowing him to leave only weeks later would therefore represent a significant change.

The timing is particularly intriguing because Alonso is already dramatically reducing his defensive numbers.

Benoit Badiashile is heading towards Napoli after Fabrizio Romano confirmed a medical will take place this week, with ReadChelsea examining how the move accelerates Chelsea’s defensive clearout.

Tosin Adarabioyo has also attracted interest from Marseille and Benfica, while Maxence Lacroix arrived this summer to strengthen Alonso’s back line.

Chelsea risk cutting Alonso’s defence too far

Acheampong is different from several of Chelsea’s other potential departures.

He is only 20, can operate at centre-back or right-back and already made 17 Premier League appearances last season. Chelsea’s earlier refusal to entertain offers suggested Alonso saw that versatility as an important part of his plans.

A loan to Coventry could make sense if regular Premier League minutes are guaranteed.

A permanent sale would be far more difficult to understand unless Chelsea receive an exceptional offer.

Badiashile is already leaving. Tosin could follow. Other defenders remain available.

Chelsea began the summer needing to solve an overcrowded centre-back department, but allowing one of their highest-rated academy defenders to join that exodus could risk taking the clearout one move too far.

Lampard’s interest may now force Chelsea to decide whether Acheampong really is as untouchable as they insisted only weeks ago.
