Chelsea snub Emi Martinez as£17m goalkeeper plan becomes clear

Chelsea have shut down speculation linking them with Emiliano Martinez, handing Robert Sanchez and Mike Penders a significant vote of confidence before the Premier League season begins.

The latest Emi Martinez Chelsea transfer speculation emerged after the Argentina international’s proposed move from Aston Villa to Juventus collapsed.

However, Standard Sport reports Chelsea have no interest in changing their goalkeeping plans. Sanchez is expected to begin the season as Xabi Alonso’s No.1, with £17million signing Penders operating as his deputy.

That stance could tell us much more about Chelsea’s long-term thinking than simply rejecting Martinez.

Understand Chelsea remain happy to go into the season with their current goalkeepers and have no interest in Emi Martinez.

Emi Martinez Chelsea transfer stance protects Mike Penders pathway

Chelsea could easily have reopened their goalkeeper search.

Martinez is a World Cup winner with extensive Premier League experience, while Juventus abandoning their pursuit has left his Villa future uncertain. The Italian club have instead agreed a loan deal for Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario after seeing their Martinez approach fail.

Villa have simultaneously agreed a deal worth around £30m for Parma goalkeeper Zion Suzuki.

Yet Chelsea are refusing to join the domino.

That is significant because Penders was signed as a long-term project rather than an immediate first-choice solution.

ReadChelsea previously reported that Chelsea expected Sanchez and Penders to compete at the top of the goalkeeper hierarchy, with any new signing needing to represent a clear upgrade before the club changed course.

Chelsea have now apparently applied that principle to Martinez and Diogo Costa.

Chelsea’s £17m decision now looks deliberate

Penders impressed during his loan spell at Strasbourg and has returned to Chelsea with Filip Jorgensen moving out of Alonso’s immediate plans.

Signing Martinez would create a major obstacle for the 21-year-old.

A 33-year-old established No.1 would not arrive to sit behind Sanchez, while Penders would likely need another loan rather than developing inside Alonso’s first-team environment.

Chelsea appear unwilling to make that sacrifice.

Their wider transfer strategy has become increasingly firm too. ReadChelsea reported within the last 24 hours that Fabrizio Romano revealed fresh Pedro Neto interest while Chelsea continue to control the winger’s future.

Goalkeeper appears even clearer.

Chelsea are not waiting for a glamorous name to become available.

They have Sanchez for now and Penders for the future.

Turning down the opportunity to enter the Martinez race may be the clearest indication yet that Alonso’s goalkeeper succession plan has already been decided.
