New York Jets fans were left fearing the worst after star running back Breece Hall went down with a non-contact injury during practice.

On Monday, Hall — who shared a tearful message upon signing a lucrative contract extension this NFL offseason — reeled in a screen pass and attempted to turn upfield when he came up lame and went down untouched. The 25-year-old gingerly limped off the field and into the blue medical tent, where he was examined by members of the training staff.

Speaking to reporters following the practice, Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that Hall suffered a strained groin. “I don’t think it was a big deal, but I want to make sure I get the evaluation on that,” Glenn said of the injury.

“The one good thing about our players, they’re honest with their injuries. And if they can go, they can go. But we will try to be precautionary with a lot of those, to make sure that we do the right things.”

As for next steps, Glenn confirmed that Hall would go for imaging to determine the severity of the health setback. “The thing is, we want to do everything we can to make sure that we all get all the answers we have when it comes to those injuries,” he added.

The Jets can ill-afford to lose Hall, who recorded 243 carries for 1,065 yards and four touchdowns last season while also reeling in 36 receptions for another 350 yards and one score.

Following the first 1,000-yard rushing campaign of his NFL career, Hall inked a three-year, $43.5 million extension with the Jets back in May.

Glenn insisted that nobody will feel sorry for the Jets should Hall be forced to miss time, acknowledging that injuries are something that every team has to deal with at one point or another.

“Injuries are a part of this league. I mean, it’s the biggest equalizer in this league,” Glenn explained. “So I think as a coach, I mean obviously you don’t want to see any of your players go down.

“But you also have to continue to move forward. And that’s how I operate in those situations. I think our medical staff does a hell of a job of evaluating the guys. And then being able to rehab them and treat them to get them back on the field as fast as they can.

“So I have total trust in those guys, and I have total trust in Breece that he’ll say exactly how he feels. But again, I want to get the evaluation, see exactly where we’re at when it comes to that.”

If Hall is unable to suit up due to his strained groin, the Jets would likely turn to Braelon Allen as their lead running back.

The 22-year-old missed 13 games last season because of an MCL injury, but showed no signs of rust during New York’s preseason opener on Friday, ripping off a 31-yard touchdown run.

“I know that most people think that once you lose a starter, there’s a huge dropoff,” Glenn concluded. “I like to look at it as all our guys are starters. And there shouldn’t be a dropoff.

“So any time we lose a player, I expect the next guy to come in and operate just as good, to be honest with you. I think that you have to have that mentality. I think the players have to have that mentality. And for the most part, everywhere I’ve been, the guys have thought like that. Because injuries happen in this league.”
