Chelsea’s attempts to find Kendry Páez another club appear to have suffered a setback, which could leave the youngster stuck in his uncomfortable situation at River Plate for longer.
Trabzonspor had recently made a formal loan offer, but sources in Ecuador now say the Turkish club have pulled out of negotiations. That leaves Chelsea looking elsewhere while Páez continues training separately from manager Eduardo Coudet’s squad.
Trabzonspor move collapses
Ecuadorian insider Mr. Offsider reported during the weekend that Trabzonspor had decided against signing Kendry Páez, with further reports from Argentina on Monday backing up that information.
Trabzonspor had reportedly proposed a one-year loan without a purchase option. They would also have covered most of Páez’s wages.
That deal would have allowed River to formally end his current loan early. Instead, Chelsea need another solution.
KV Mechelen could provide one. The Belgian club were linked with Páez at the same time as Trabzonspor and have remained among the possible destinations for the 19-year-old.
Unlike Trabzonspor, though, there has been no report of a formal offer from Mechelen.
Norwich City possibility appears
An English option has also now been mentioned.
Mr. Offsider claimed Chelsea have held talks with several Championship clubs over Páez, but Ecuador’s El Futbolero specifically identifies Norwich City as a possibility.
That link remains tentative. There is no suggestion of an offer or advanced negotiations with Norwich. But a Championship loan would at least keep Páez in England and give him his first experience of the country’s football.
For now, however, Chelsea appear to have lost the most advanced option they had.
If the Ecuadorian reports are correct, Trabzonspor have walked away, Mechelen remain only a possibility and Norwich are at an even earlier stage.
Until something progresses, Páez remains out of River’s plans and waiting for Chelsea to find him somewhere to play.
