Chelsea make stunning£100m Pedro Neto call after Xabi Alonso surprise

Pedro Neto’s Chelsea future has become one of the summer’s more unusual transfer stories.

The Blues want close to £100million for the Portugal international despite paying Wolves £54m only two years ago, according to Standard Sport.

Al-Hilal and Manchester City are interested, but Chelsea have yet to receive a formal bid and are not actively trying to sell the 26-year-old.

Then came another significant clue.

Xabi Alonso used Neto at right wing-back during Chelsea’s final pre-season victory over Real Sociedad.

Chelsea are therefore placing an extraordinary valuation on a player their new manager may actually be finding more ways to use.

Chelsea’s Pedro Neto valuation looks increasingly deliberate

A price approaching £100m would represent a potential profit of roughly £46m on Chelsea’s original investment.

But Chelsea’s valuation has not been set in isolation.

Standard Sport reports that the club have looked at the inflated European winger market when deciding Neto’s price, with major fees elsewhere helping push valuations upwards.

That makes Chelsea’s stance straightforward.

They do not need to sell Neto.

Instead, interested clubs are effectively being told they must pay a premium large enough to make losing him worthwhile.

ReadChelsea has already examined how Chelsea’s defensive clearout is gathering pace under Xabi Alonso, but Neto represents a completely different type of squad decision.

He is not simply excess depth.

Xabi Alonso may have increased Neto’s value to Chelsea

Neto has made 103 Chelsea appearances, recording 19 goals and 19 assists.

He also featured 52 times last season and started all five of Portugal’s World Cup matches before their last-16 elimination.

Those numbers already make him one of Alonso’s more experienced attacking options.

The Real Sociedad experiment adds another dimension.

Alonso’s 3-4-2-1 relies heavily on aggressive wing-backs capable of carrying the ball, beating defenders and attacking the final third. Neto naturally possesses those qualities even if the defensive responsibilities of the position remain relatively new.

Using him there allows Alonso to retain Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer closer to goal without completely sacrificing Neto from his strongest side.

That could become particularly useful against opponents Chelsea expect to dominate.

£100m asking price sends clear message to Man City and Al-Hilal

Manchester City may admire Neto.

Al-Hilal may be willing to explore a deal.

But Chelsea currently have little reason to compromise.

Neto has six years remaining on the seven-year contract he signed in 2024, Alonso has just found another possible role for him and no formal offer has arrived.

The situation could still change before the transfer window closes.

For now, though, Chelsea demanding nearly £100m for a player they are simultaneously experimenting with tactically looks less like an invitation to negotiate.

It looks like a warning: pay an extraordinary fee or Neto stays at Stamford Bridge.
