Liverpool begin their 2026-27 Premier League campaign on Sunday with a trip to St James’ Park to face Newcastle United. It marks new head coach Andoni Iraola’s first competitive game in charge of the Reds.
Newcastle themselves are hoping to start the season with a flying result at home against Liverpool. The match kicks off the new campaign for both clubs.

Liverpool’s opening weeks carry extra significance for their new manager. Iraola faces Bournemouth away on September 19, his first return to the club he left last summer.
The fixture list also throws up two landmark meetings later in the season.
Iraola takes charge of his first Merseyside derby on November 28 at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium, while Liverpool’s first meeting with Manchester United comes at Anfield on the weekend of November 21.
Two of those Anfield fixtures have now been changed.
The Premier League has confirmed that Liverpool’s home games against Manchester City and Arsenal in the autumn have both been moved.
Liverpool’s clash with Manchester City at Anfield has been pushed back a day, from Saturday to Sunday, October 11, with a 4.30pm BST kick-off. The fixture against Arsenal has also been switched, moving to Sunday, November 1, kicking off at 4.30pm GMT.
The changes come as Liverpool prepare to open their season away at Newcastle, with confirmation of the new dates arriving just days before a ball is kicked in anger.
Supporters with existing travel or hospitality plans around the original October dates will need to adjust accordingly.
Liverpool’s home fixture list around the rearranged matches includes Nottingham Forest the week after the Newcastle opener, before the Reds host Manchester United at Anfield in November.
The Arsenal fixture follows shortly after the Merseyside derby at Everton on November 28.
The Premier League regularly amends fixture dates and kick-off times throughout a season to accommodate live broadcast selections, both domestically and internationally.
Clubs and supporters are informed of such changes once details are finalised with broadcasters.
