Josh Acheampong is edging closer to a big move away from Stamford Bridge. Coventry City are stepping up their chase, and Frank Lampard wants fresh Premier League reinforcements. Chelsea are ready to sanction a shock departure, as per the latest transfer news.
Josh Acheampong latest as Coventry step up chase
As reported by talkSPORT, Coventry are seriously looking at a deal for the highly-rated centre-back. Frank Lampard is reportedly driving the interest himself. The Blues had called Josh Acheampong practically untouchable earlier in the window. However, that stance now looks like it is softening as the summer window nears its end. Naturally, the report has sparked plenty of debate among supporters this week.
The 20-year-old has featured regularly in this pre-season campaign. Even so, regular senior football is far from guaranteed under Xabi Alonso this term. Coventry, back in the Premier League after a 25-year gap, could offer exactly the games he needs right now. Last season brought 17 league appearances for him, a genuine breakthrough campaign. Unsurprisingly, several bigger clubs began taking notice of him.
Manchester City, Manchester United and Bayern Munich all showed interest earlier this summer. Meanwhile, Chelsea simply turned down every approach that came in. That picture has since shifted quite noticeably. Coventry now senses a real chance as the deadline nears.

Why Frank Lampard wants Josh Acheampong at Coventry
Lampard’s old ties at his former club could prove decisive in this pursuit. Speaking on The Window, talkSPORT’s Alex Crook confirmed the growing interest. He said: “Keep an eye on Josh Acheampong. He’s a player that Frank Lampard would like to take to Coventry.” He also added that Chelsea might be willing to do the deal before the window shuts. For now, Josh Acheampong is simply focused on his football, though talk of this move shows little sign of slowing.
The 20-year-old is capable of playing in more than one defensive role. This gives Lampard more options as Coventry adjust to life in the top flight. Since his debut back in 2024, Josh Acheampong has made 44 first-team appearances, netting twice along the way. Those numbers explain why the west London club rated him so highly in the first place.
A loan move could genuinely suit both sides in this case. On one hand, Chelsea would keep hold of a player under contract until 2029. On the other hand, Coventry, without top-flight football for 25 years, would gain a ready-made option who already knows the level.

Chelsea’s defensive rethink opens the door
Interest in the defender comes amid real change at the back for the Blues this summer. Trevoh Chalobah has since made his move to Serie A side Como. Meanwhile, Chelsea’s £52million swoop for Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace has pushed a few names toward the exit door.
Benoit Badiashile also looks set for a Napoli move, starting on loan with a buy option worth around £23million. Axel Disasi’s next step also remains up in the air, with both West Ham and Crystal Palace showing interest in a move for him. Both moves would leave Xabi Alonso with fewer options at centre-back.
For Coventry City, timing matters more than almost anything at this stage. Getting a deal done before deadline day would hand Lampard a defender who already knows the pressure of regular first-team football. Either way, Josh Acheampong has become one of the transfer window’s most talked-about names this summer.
