Atlanta Falcons May Be Plotting To Sign 3x Pro Bowl Pass-Rusher

Like another team in the NFC, the Atlanta Falcons have been hit with a series of setbacks. The first of which came when Jalon Walker, the 15th overall pick in the 2025 first round, suffered a torn ACL. Then, James Pearce Jr., the 26th overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, was hit with an eight-game suspension.

Now, the Falcons are without their top two pass-rushers to start the season, and Walker won’t be coming back at all in 2026. Thus, the team has begun making other plans.

As Ari Meirov reported on Monday, the Falcons brought in a surprising player for a workout: three-time Pro Bowl pass-rusher Za’Darius Smith. He recently worked out for the Cleveland Browns and was expected to join the team to help make up for trading Myles Garrett.

Yet, after he left Cleveland without a contract, it now appears that the Falcons may get to Smith first.

Potential twist: Veteran pass rusher Za’Darius Smith, who has been expected to sign with the #Browns, worked out for the #Falcons.

Now 33 years old, Smith was only active for five games last season with the Philadelphia Eagles, making two starts. He recorded 10 tackles (2 for loss) and 1.5 sacks.

Yet, Smith recorded nine sacks in 17 games split between the Browns and Detroit Lions in 2024. Now the Falcons are trying to see how much Smith has left in the tank. From Smith’s perspective, the opportunity may be greater in Atlanta after their recent string of edge rusher setbacks. There’s no word on whether Cleveland or Atlanta have offered him a contract.
