Saints Could Be Without Top Rookie For Steelers Game

The New Orleans Saints are already in danger of not having top rookie WR Jordyn Tyson for the team’s Paris game against the Pittsburgh Steelers in late October. Per multiple reports, including one from NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, Tyson’s recent hamstring injury could sideline him for the next two months. He’s set to miss the first several weeks of the season, and there’s no guarantee he returns for the Saints’ Week 7 game against the Steelers.

A two-month timeline to the day puts Tyson back in play on October 17th, eight days before facing Pittsburgh. However, hamstring injuries are notoriously fickle and can take longer to heal than initial projections suggest. He’s likely to open the year on injured reserve.

Even if Tyson returns, he’ll likely be on a greatly reduced snap count after missing so much time.

New Orleans took a risk drafting Tyson eighth overall this year. Despite his talent, a lengthy injury history raised red flags, including a hamstring injury that nagged him throughout his final year at Arizona State. Reports indicate this injury is to Tyson’s other leg, but it casts doubt on his ability to stay healthy for long stretches.

Chris Olave remains the team’s top wide receiver, but depth is thin without Tyson. Devaughn Vele is likely the next man up, with rookies Barion Brown and Bryce Lance also fighting for reps. Tight end Juwan Johnson and running back Alvin Kamara will remain heavy pass game targets for second-year QB Tyler Shough while new RB Travis Etienne has caught over 50 passes in each of his last two seasons.

Tyson isn’t the only first-round wide receiver dealing with injury. Philadelphia Eagles wideout Makai Lemon, a prospect Pittsburgh nearly drafted before the Eagles traded with Dallas to take him instead, has missed the summer with his own hamstring injury. He reportedly began jogging on the side during today’s practice.

Pittsburgh’s own first-round pick, OT Max Iheanachor, has missed the last week with a neck/shoulder injury. Head coach Mike McCarthy said he was unlikely to play in Friday’s second preseason game against the New York Jets.
