OXNARD, Calif. -- New Orleans Saints rookie wide receiver Jordyn Tyson could miss the next two months with a hamstring injury, sources told Ian Rapoport and Mike Garofolo of the NFL Network on Monday.
Tyson injured his hamstring in the Saints' joint practice against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Aug. 13. The Saints will open the season at the Detroit Lions on Sept. 13. A two-month timetable from the injury would be Week 6 leading up to their game at the New York Giants. The Saints will leave for a week in Paris right after that game.
Saints coach Kellen Moore said on Friday that this was an injury that could potentially go into the regular season and declined to put a timetable on it while they were still seeking opinions.
According to sources, Tyson sought multiple opinions on the right hamstring injury, which Moore said is different from Tyson's hamstring issues he dealt with at Arizona State.
Tyson's injury occurred after he caught a pass and landed awkwardly, slowly getting up to test his leg before jogging off the field with athletic trainers. Tyson did not return to practice.
"I think my understanding of this one, any player that was put in his situation where your foot slips and you get shoved from behind, this has nothing to do with Jordyn's history," Moore said. "Any player in that situation probably has the same diagnosis coming out of this."
The Saints were cautious with the eighth overall pick in rookie minicamp and during OTAs and veteran minicamp, but prior to his injury, Tyson practiced fully every day in training camp, with the exception of 1-on-1 drills against defensive backs.
"Jordyn's had a great camp. He's played really good football. Inevitably, this is the unfortunate part of what preseason and training camp football is," Moore said. "We've already had a few of these guys, that you just have something that comes up and ... we'll just work through it. Jordan's done a great job and he'll continue to do a great job. He'll be fine. We'll get through this and he'll be good to go."
The Saints travel to California on Monday for joint practices against the Dallas Cowboys and Los Angeles Rams, but Moore said Friday that he didn't know whether Tyson would be traveling with the team.
"We'll have some guys who, if they aren't going to be a part of any of the work in California, a lot of those guys will stay here just so they can stay in this situation, get plenty of work at our facility," Moore said.
