Every season feels like it’s the Super Bowl or bust for the Dallas Cowboys and their fans, but the team’s offseason moves don’t always reflect that mentality. This season, however, it sounds like there’s a chance that they could.
The Dallas Cowboys already made a big splash this preseason when they signed veteran pass rusher Von Miller on Sunday, adding immediate talent to their defensive line. However, it sounds like the team is open to more moves, too.
Cowboys Tease Trade
Last month, Cowboys team owner and general manager Jerry Jones hinted at a possible “substantive” trade to help bolster the roster.
“I’d be very interested,” Jones said during the team’s annual news conference to open training camp via The Athletic. “I’d give up the future to [get something] substantive to where we are today — as to a player — to give you an idea about what I invest, something substantive, to get the right kind of deal and improve us for opening day. I would. I feel that good about this team this year. Of course, you know that I haven’t seen this team play together, but in general, looking ahead, I think we’ve got a chance to be worthy of spending some future if we saw an opportunity.”
More specifically, Jones said that he would be willing to give up a “top pick” for a defensive playmaker like a linebacker or a pass rusher.
“If we get an opportunity to add to this thing, we’re very capable of doing that,” Jones said, via Jon Machota of TheAthletic.com. “The mood is here to do it. . . . If any place it would be to improve our play-making ability on defense and pressure that quarterback or have an opportunity to do something special at linebacker. A top pick is expendable this year to add somebody meaningful that would help us now. I’m not just looking for a player; we’re looking for somebody that can add to the mix.”
Still on the Table
While some may have thought that the addition of Miller would rule out a high-profile trade, it sounds like such a trade it still very much an option.
“Yes, if we had an opportunity, I would be [open to a trade],” Jones said this week, via Tommy Yarrish of the team website. “It’s as much about what I think of where we are, which I’m more positive than when we started camp, seriously, about what our chances are. And so I think if we saw an opportunity to take a little of the future and put it on this team, I’d do it if it would help us.”
In fact, Jones said that he is even more excited about the possibility than he was before.
“I’m even more excited today than I was when we started camp that our team is going to be one that if we can have some things go right for us, avoid some injury, we could really be something that we all want to be, and that’s a team that’s competing for the big game,” Jones said. “Bottom line is, the answer is yes. If we saw something that would help us anyplace, we’d do it.”
We’ll have to see whether or not it actually happens.
