On this day in 1979, Reading’s impressive defensive record came to an unexpected end. After finishing the 1978/79 season with 11 consecutive League matches without conceding a goal, Reading and their goalkeeper, Steve Death, finally saw their streak broken. The opening day of the Division 3 season saw Reading face Brentford at Elm Park. In a match that ended in a 2-2 draw, it was an own goal by Reading defender Stewart Henderson that ended their remarkable run. This goal marked the first time Reading had conceded in 1103 minutes of League football.

18th August 1987

In 1987, Liverpool faced an unusual disruption to their season. Their first home match against Charlton was postponed due to the collapse of a Victorian sewer under the Kop. This issue also affected their next two scheduled home matches. Despite these setbacks, Liverpool’s performance on the pitch remained unaffected. The team went unbeaten in their first 29 League matches of the season, showcasing their dominance and resilience. This strong start laid the foundation for Liverpool to comfortably secure the League championship that season.
