Former Chelsea winger set for stunning£47.5m move after BlueCo rise

Diego Moreira is closing in on a remarkable £47.5million move to AC Milan just two years after Chelsea allowed the winger to leave Stamford Bridge for Strasbourg.

Fabrizio Romano reports Milan have reached a verbal agreement worth around £43m plus add-ons, potentially taking the package to £47.5m. Moreira is understood to have prioritised the Serie A giants despite interest from England and Germany.

For Chelsea, the eye-catching part is not simply that a former player is earning a huge move.

It is how dramatically Moreira’s value has exploded after entering the BlueCo pathway.

Diego Moreira value explodes after Chelsea exit

Chelsea signed Moreira from Benfica on a free transfer in 2023, but he made only one senior appearance for the Blues before joining sister club Strasbourg permanently the following summer. Chelsea confirmed the transfer in August 2024.

Reports over the precise transfer fee differed at the time. Some placed it at only £1.7m, while L’Equipe later reported Strasbourg paid around €8m.

Either way, Moreira’s development in France has been extraordinary.

Initially viewed primarily as an attacking winger, he developed into an effective wing-back at Strasbourg and became one of the club’s major young assets.

Now Milan appear willing to spend close to £50m to secure him.

That transformation is particularly interesting for Chelsea while Xabi Alonso continues reshaping his own squad. The Blues have already used Strasbourg extensively to develop young players, including Mike Penders, whose pathway has become increasingly important after Chelsea decided against entering the race for Emi Martinez.

Moreira will not count as a traditional Chelsea transfer success if Milan complete the deal.

But his rise from fringe player at Stamford Bridge to a potential £47.5m signing for one of Europe’s biggest clubs provides another striking example of the value being created inside BlueCo’s Strasbourg project.
