You really have to wonder why Enzo Maresca decided to walk away from Chelsea in January.

OK, so the Italian was unhappy with some things behind the scenes at Stamford Bridge or whatever. But he still had a really good squad, perhaps one even better than Manchester City’s, which he is now in charge of.

Why would I say that? Well because Maresca has joined City only to target half of his old team. Honestly, what is the point?

His interest in Enzo Fernandez is well-documented, but that should be over after City’s failure to sign the midfielder before Chelsea’s self-imposed deadline. Unfortunately, that saga does not appear to be finished just yet and could leave the Blues looking like clowns by the end of the transfer window (but we’re not going to discuss that today).

As well as Fernandez, though, Maresca is also keen on Pedro Neto and Malo Gusto. According to TEAMtalk, City are planning to make a move for all three players before the transfer window closes.

Clearly, Maresca still loves this Chelsea team! Perhaps he should have avoided the politics at Stamford Bridge and stayed there instead of joining City and trying to sign all of his former players.

If Cole Palmer and Moises Caicedo were available, you would imagine that he also would have asked for them.

If City really are planning to make a swoop for Fernandez, Neto and Gusto before the transfer deadline, we should probably chuck in Robert Sanchez as well. Maresca would probably take him, too.

Chelsea want £100m for Neto, so it would be a surprise if he ends up at the Etihad. As for Fernandez and Gusto, we will just have to wait and see.

But Maresca is not exactly covering himself in glory. He left a Chelsea side that finished in 10th place for the second-best team in the country, yet wants several players from the Blues? Make it make sense…
