Portsmouth are the latest side to be credited with interest in Liverpool defender Luke Chambers.
Portsmouth boss John Mousinho revealed in the wake of the opening day loss to QPR that Connor Ogilvie is yet to return to training after knee surgery earlier this summer. It leaves Pompey short on left-back options once again, but they’re eyeing Luke Chambers as a potential solution.
The Athletic states that the Liverpool defender is the subject of interest from the Fratton Park outfit. Chambers has impressed for Andoni Iraola’s side in pre-season and is likely to see a loan sanctioned before the transfer window ends.

QPR and Blackburn Rovers are also keen on Chambers, who can play as a left-back, wing-back or centre-back. It means Pompey will have competition for his signature if they do choose to pursue a deal.
Why Portsmouth must sign another left-back this summer
Left-back has been a problem position for Portsmouth for a while now. They have good players there, but they are rarely all available at once.
Ogilvie has been the mainstay on the left since he signed in 2021. Availability is less of a problem with the 30-year-old, but he has still had spells on the sidelines, most notably last season and back in 2023/24.
Jacob Farrell was signed in 2024 with the vision of growing into a starting role and potential financial asset, but his two years with Pompey has been ravaged by injury. The Australian is out again at present, meaning Zak Swanson had to cover on the left against QPR.
Granted, Mousinsho has two left-backs and a versatile player in Swanson who can operate on both flanks. However, with the Championship looking so strong this year, Pompey can not afford to go into the campaign with their current options after Ogilvie’s setback.
Be it Chambers or someone else, a new left-back has to be added to the ranks.

The Verdict: Portsmouth, QPR and Blackburn Rovers can all make compelling cases in Luke Chambers pursuit
Chambers’ solid Charlton Athletic loan and strong pre-season means interest comes as no surprise. All of his admirers can make good cases for his signing too.
For Portsmouth, their left-back injury situation means the 22-year-old would find decent game time.
QPR have four left-backs on the books already. However, Ziyad Larkeche is free to leave, there are questions over Esquerdinha’s future, Boy Kemper limped out of the Pompey win, and Dennis Cirkin needs time to get up to speed after his free transfer signing.
Blackburn Rovers meanwhile want a different option at left-back to Harry Pickering and Yuri Ribeiro. Importantly, there is a strong loan relationship between them and Liverpool owing to previous successes too.
Chambers and Liverpool will carefully consider options before a decision is made.
