AC Milan forward Christopher Nkunku and Newcastle United have “agreed in principle” on personal terms, according to reports.

Medium column The Article claims that the Magpies have been in discussions with the Frenchman’s entourage over the past week.

However, there is still no guarantee that Nkunku will make the move to St James’ Park due to his asking price, as well as competition from other clubs.

Despite being deemed surplus to requirements by AC Milan just a year after his move from Chelsea, the Rossoneri are reportedly demanding a fee in excess of €30m (£26m).

Who else is pursuing Nkunku’s signature

Another source, Marca journalist Matteo Moretto, has confirmed that the Magpies are keen on the 28-year-old.

However, he also named Nkunku’s former club RB Leipzig, as well as Borussia Dortmund, as potential suitors. Aston Villa have been credited with an interest too.

Why are Newcastle United keen on signing him?

Matthias Jaissle’s side have lacked firepower in pre-season, and the German may well have recommended Nkunku to sporting director Ross Wilson.

Jaissle managed two of Leipzig’s sister clubs, FC Liefering and Red Bull Salzburg, when Nkunku was playing in the Bundesliga, and he would have undoubtedly watched him in action.

The France international had an excellent record during his time with Leipzig, scoring 70 goals and providing 56 assists in 172 appearances, but he has not been able to replicate those numbers at either Chelsea or AC Milan. Last season, he scored just three times from open play, with his other five goals coming from the penalty spot.
