Liverpool have released their new club film, “Captains,” on All Red Video, according to Liverpool FC’s official website.
The film brings together three men who have worn the armband at Anfield across different eras: Steven Gerrard, Graeme Souness and current captain Virgil van Dijk.
UK ONLY
The trio met at Anfield to discuss what the role has meant to each of them.
Van Dijk, captain since 2023, explains his own approach to the position in the modern game and reflects on the highs of his time at the club, while Gerrard and Souness look back on their own spells wearing the armband in the 2000s and 1980s respectively.
The three also discuss what it means to represent the fans and the city, and pick out their most cherished achievements with the club.
Souness captained Liverpool from January 1982 until his departure in 1984, leading the side to three First Division titles, three League Cups, and the 1984 European Cup, won on penalties against Roma in his final match for the club.
Gerrard held the captaincy for 12 years, from October 2003 to May 2015, the longest tenure of any Liverpool captain, a spell that included the 2005 Champions League triumph in Istanbul, an FA Cup and a League Cup.
Van Dijk took over the captaincy from Jordan Henderson in the summer of 2023 and has since won two major honours in the role: the Carabao Cup in 2024, when he scored the winning goal in extra time against Chelsea, and the Premier League title in 2024-25.
Reflecting on the rarity of the role, Souness says in the film: “How many people can say they’ve captained Liverpool Football Club? The three of us can count ourselves very lucky.”
Van Dijk describes what he believes the captaincy demands: “It all starts, I think, with, ‘Do you understand the club in terms of what is required to be a Liverpool player?'” Gerrard, turning to Van Dijk, adds: “The best days ever. I’d swap with you right now!”
All Red Full and Video members can now watch the whole programme on-demand. Fans who have not yet joined the service can get a free 14-day trial of All Red Video to watch the film.
“Captains” continues a series of club-produced originals released through All Red Video, the streaming platform run by Liverpool.
The film’s release follows an earlier announcement of the project, first reported by Liverpool FC and picked up by DaveOCKOP on August 12, ahead of Tuesday’s launch.
