The Magpies have been preparing for the opening fixture under new head coach Matthias Jaissle, who replaced Eddie Howe this summer.

With the meeting now less than a week away, both teams have continued to strengthen their squads.

Liverpool on Monday reached an agreement with Paris Saint-Germain forward Ibrahim Mbaye on a five-year contract.

The Magpies have also added another player ahead of the fixture this weekend.

Newcastle United have officially announced the signing of Benfica full-back Amar Dedic on a five-year contract, with the 24-year-old becoming the sixth senior addition of the summer at St James’ Park. The club confirmed the transfer on Tuesday.

The Bosnia and Herzegovina international previously worked with Jaissle during his time at both FC Liefering and Red Bull Salzburg in Austria.

The reunion with Jaissle was an important factor for Dedic, who expressed his excitement at joining Newcastle and returning to work with the coach.

Dedic began his senior career with Salzburg after progressing through the club’s academy and spending time with feeder side FC Liefering. He also had a loan spell with Wolfsberger AC before establishing himself in Salzburg’s first team, where he made 95 appearances in all competitions.

The full-back then spent the 2024-25 campaign on loan at Marseille, making 10 Ligue 1 appearances, before joining Benfica permanently last summer. He also featured for the Portuguese club at St James’ Park during last October’s Champions League meeting.

The timing of the signing gives Dedic the opportunity to settle into Jaissle’s squad before Newcastle’s opening Premier League fixture against Liverpool.
