Liverpool had been open to Alisson leaving this summer but U-turned on their decision to leave Juventus frustrated, with Luciano Spalletti explaining their bid.

Alisson will remain Liverpool’s No. 1 goalkeeper this season having previously been expected to depart after eight years.

Juventus held positive talks with the Brazilian and a move was being lined up for a fee in the region of €15 million (£12.8m), according to reports in Italy.

But the situation turned towards the end of May, with both Liverpool and Alisson instead committing to another campaign together.

Why Juventus wanted to sign Alisson

Speaking after Juventus secured the signing of Guglielmo Vicario on loan from Tottenham, Juventus head coach Spalletti revealed they had sought to bring in Alisson for his elite-level experience.

“There were some evaluations to be made, but overall we didn’t have any doubts about Vicario,” Spalletti told reporters including Tuttomercatoweb‘s Tommaso Bonan.

“We probably thought, with an experienced goalkeeper like Alisson, [Emi] Martinez and so on, because they were the names we needed to get, to have something more in terms of experience.

“But Vicario also won competitions, he had experience abroad at a very important club, so we are at that level there.”

Could Alisson still leave Liverpool in 2027?

There is little arguing that Alisson is a better and more established goalkeeper than Vicario and the failure to land his signature will be a major disappointment at Juventus.

Before the deal with Tottenham was agreed it was suggested that Zion Suzuki could join Paris Saint-Germain from Parma before being loaned to Juventus for the 2026/27 campaign.

While there is an £8.6 million option to buy, there is still a sense that Juventus are not committed to signing Vicario permanently.

That could open Alisson up to a renewed bid next summer, with his current deal at Liverpool set to expire in 2027.

On his Substack, journalist David Lynch explained that Liverpool triggering a 12-month extension clause on Alisson‘s contract was “considered purely a business decision aimed at preserving value.”

Clearly that changed after “it became clear that factors unrelated to Alisson were influencing whether it would, indeed, be smart to let him go,” with the loss of another senior dressing room presence in Ibrahima Konate among those.

It remains to be seen if Liverpool – who still had Arne Slot in the dugout when they decided to keep Alisson – now offer their No. 1 a new contract or push ahead with succession plans.

There are still reservations over Giorgi Mamardashvili, and This Is Anfield understands the backup stopper has expressed his disappointment at how his debut season at Anfield unfolded.

In particular there are concerns over the Georgian’s distribution, which is an area he is working hard on with new goalkeeping coach Alejandro Rosalen.

Mamardashvili made 20 appearances in his first year at Liverpool, with his chances largely coming when Alisson was sidelined through injury – which is a worryingly common occurrence for the 33-year-old.
