Mikel Arteta’s private assessment of Christian Nørgaard has emerged following the midfielder’s £7million Arsenal exit, with the Dane reportedly falling short in one crucial area.
Nørgaard remained a popular figure inside the Emirates Stadium and impressed Arsenal staff with his professionalism despite spending much of last season outside Arteta’s preferred XI.
That was not enough to convince the manager on the pitch.
ESPN’s James Olley reports that Arteta felt Nørgaard did not provide the level of control he demands from his midfielders. Sources stressed there were no concerns over either his attitude or professionalism.
It offers the clearest explanation yet for Arsenal sanctioning his departure after only one season.

Christian Nørgaard Arsenal exit explained
Nørgaard joined Arsenal from Brentford for an initial £10m last summer but made just one Premier League start, which came against Crystal Palace after Arteta’s side had already secured the title.
He eventually completed a £7m move to Everton earlier this month.
That decision initially appeared slightly surprising given Arteta’s glowing public assessment of the midfielder.
ReadArsenal reported after his Everton move that Arteta had described Nørgaard as a “glue player” and praised the role he played around Arsenal’s title-winning squad.
The new information separates his off-field value from Arteta’s footballing judgement.
Nørgaard could offer experience, defensive awareness and leadership, but Arsenal’s manager wants his deeper midfielders to dictate matches under pressure and establish the tempo of possession.
That helps explain Arsenal’s subsequent business.
Martin Zubimendi remains a specialist controller, while Bruno Guimarães gives Arteta another midfielder capable of receiving under pressure and progressing possession.
Martin Ødegaard has already praised how quickly Guimarães has settled after the Brazilian featured in Arsenal’s Community Shield victory over Manchester City.
Arteta clearly respected what Nørgaard gave Arsenal.
But this latest insight suggests respect alone was never going to earn him the responsibility the manager demands in the centre of the pitch.
