Liverpool is set to receive an offer to play in a brand-new $52 million stadium for 2028 in a historic match against... Liverpool.

That being Liverpool FC of Montevideo in Uruguay, a club that has many ties to Merseyside and the Reds, dating back to the early 1900s.

The Uruguayan outfit was founded in 1915, and took on the name after many cultural similarities between the city of Liverpool and the country's capital, Montevideo. At the time, many of the coal ships that moved into the nearby port came from Merseyside, while plenty of the local teams also took on anglicized names for a similar reason.

That is where some of the similarities stop, however, with Liverpool of Uruguay having a totally different look to the Reds that have become so well-known across the entire world.

Instead of that iconic red, the Montevideo outfit plays in blue and black stripes, with the away kit often a variation of white with black and blue involved.

The honors list isn't quite as extensive, though Liverpool did win the 2023 first division title, along with plenty of success from 2019 to the present day in the short-format tournaments it takes part in, along with the national Super Cup competition.

After that success, the club has since worked on building a new $52 million stadium, which its president, Jose Luis Palma, revealed that he wanted to welcome the English Liverpool to host the first game in 2028.

He said, via Montevideo: "Barring any unforeseen circumstances, which I don't foresee, the stadium will be inaugurated in February or March of 2028."

While it was revealed that he wanted the inaugural match to be "against Liverpool of England", an offer has not yet been formally made; that is to come sometime in the future.

It's unclear whether the Reds would be willing to take on that opportunity, especially at what could be an awkward time of the season in February or March.

There are the March internationals that could free up the team, but considering how many stars will be away on international duty, it wouldn't be a first-team at the club's disposal.

Whether that would put off the hosts or the visitors is unclear, with many details still be be thrashed out before that possibility could happen.

It remains to be seen what could come from it, but it would be a historic match involving two Liverpools connected through history.
