Newcastle's search for a new holding midfielder rumbles on, and a brand new name has entered the picture as of Tuesday evening.
Following links to Nicolas Seiwald, Lucas Bergvall and Carlos Baleba, Manchester City's Nico Gonzalez is the latest man Matthias Jaissle's Mags are pursuing.

Newcastle United are in talks with Man City over a deal to sign Nico Gonzalez, according to David Ornstein.
He reports that Newcastle are in the midst of a 'number of exploratory conversations' regarding midfield additions, but confirms that discussions are underway with City officials, even if a deal for the 24-year-old is not yet at an advanced stage.
Gonzalez completed a £52m move to the Etihad last January, joining from Portuguese giants Porto.
He only started two Premier League games since January, but did rack up a total of 41 appearances for Man City over the entire 2025-26 campaign.
Rodri may have departed for Barcelona, however, with Ayyoub Bouaddi due to sign from Lille and Elliott Anderson already secured, City may be open to Nico's sale.
Gonzalez in no rush to leave
Despite his recent lack of league starts, the player appears happy to stay in Manchester and fight for his place, based on a recent interview.
Speaking earlier this month (via GOAL), the former Barcelona youth product indicated that he's eager to stay under new boss Enzo Maresca:
"I'm happy here. I don't want to leave, and I think the club wants me to stay. I haven't seen anything, but I'm happy here.
"I don't think any player has the position guaranteed for all the matches. Everyone has to work hard. We are one of the best teams in the world, and obviously, there is competition in every position.
"That is what makes us be in the position that we are, winning so many Premier Leagues and competing for everything."
This would be a great signing if we could get it over the line - he'd bring defensive nous and technical ability to our engine room - but it sounds like there's work to do yet, and it's never good news when a potential deal becomes public before anything is advanced.
