Liverpool’s ownership story has taken another major twist.
According to **The Athletic**, Fenway Sports Group have sold **close to 40% of Liverpool Football Club** to the consortium led by Amit Bhatia and featuring investors including Jeff Bezos.
That is considerably more than the roughly 30% stake that was initially reported.
The Athletic’s report says the consortium has acquired around **38% of Liverpool**, making this a much more significant change to the club’s ownership structure than many supporters initially expected.
When the original announcement came out, the deal was described as a **strategic minority investment**.
But almost 40% is a substantial portion of Liverpool.
FSG still remain the majority owners and retain operational control, but handing over almost two-fifths of the club means the new consortium now has a very significant financial interest in Liverpool.
And there is an even bigger detail.
The Athletic’s reporting says the agreement gives the consortium an option to acquire a controlling stake in Liverpool within the next **12 months**.
If that eventually happens, we could be looking at the beginning of a completely new era at Anfield.
**Is FSG preparing to leave?**
This is the question Liverpool supporters are inevitably going to ask.
FSG have owned Liverpool since 2010 and have overseen an extraordinary transformation of the club.
But they have also turned their original investment into an asset now worth **more than £5 billion**.
Selling almost 40% gives FSG the opportunity to realise a huge amount of that increased value while still retaining control for now.
Could this be the first step towards eventually selling the entire club?
It’s impossible to say with certainty.
But the fact there is reportedly an option for the new investors to become majority owners within 12 months makes that possibility impossible to ignore.
Having Jeff Bezos involved makes this even more fascinating.
The Amazon founder is one of the richest people on the planet, and this represents his first confirmed major investment in sports ownership.
But he isn’t simply buying a tiny piece of Liverpool.
The consortium he’s part of now reportedly controls close to **40% of the club**.
That gives the group a serious stake in Liverpool’s future.
And if they eventually exercise their option to become majority owners, Bezos and his fellow investors could become the people ultimately responsible for taking Liverpool forward.
This is where supporters will understandably have mixed feelings.
A new ownership group could potentially bring **huge commercial opportunities, global connections and investment expertise**.
But Liverpool fans don’t want their club treated simply as another financial asset.
They want an ownership group that understands what Liverpool means to its supporters and its community.
And that’s why the next 12 months could be incredibly important.
One thing I wouldn’t do is assume that Bezos arriving means Liverpool suddenly have unlimited money to spend.
The investment doesn’t automatically create a massive transfer budget.
Liverpool still have to operate within financial regulations, and the club’s transfer strategy remains a separate matter.
However, if new investors can dramatically increase Liverpool’s commercial revenues over the long term, that could eventually give the club **greater sustainable spending power**.
And that’s potentially much more important than one huge transfer window.
Only a short time ago, we were talking about FSG selling a minority stake.
Now we’re talking about **almost 40%**.
And we’re potentially talking about a route to majority ownership within a year.
That’s a huge difference.
FSG aren’t gone.
They remain in control.
But this is becoming much more than a simple investment.
Whatever happens next, Liverpool’s ownership story has just become **a lot more interesting.**
