Chelsea scrap U21 and U19 names in major Cobham academy shake-up

Chelsea have made a major change to their academy structure by renaming the club’s Under-21 and Under-19 teams as “Cobham Next Gen” from the start of the 2026/27 season.

The new identity, shortened to CNG, will cover Harry Hudson’s leading academy group as Chelsea look to emphasise the final step between youth football and the senior side.

But this is more than a branding exercise.

Chelsea say the change reflects just how young their development squads have become, with last season’s Under-21 group actually carrying an average age closer to an Under-18 team. Several 16-year-olds also featured regularly.

Chelsea have announced they are rebranding their Under-21 and Under-19 teams as ‘Cobham Next Gen’ under head coach Harry Hudson.

Chelsea explain major Cobham Next Gen change

In their official announcement, Chelsea said the new identity better represents players gaining experience above their natural age group before attempting to break into senior football.

That approach produced impressive results last season.

Chelsea finished top of the Premier League 2 regular-season table despite using one of the competition’s youngest squads, with the club continuing to accelerate players through different age groups.

Reece James, Levi Colwill and Josh Acheampong are all cited by Chelsea as current examples of players completing the journey from Cobham into the senior squad.

The timing of the rebrand is particularly interesting.

ReadChelsea recently examined how more than £300m in academy sales has created a major question over Chelsea’s pathway from Cobham into the first team.

Giving the academy’s final development stage its own identity places even greater focus on whether the best players ultimately progress into Xabi Alonso’s squad.

Chelsea’s wider development model is also producing huge value elsewhere, with ReadChelsea reporting today that former Blue Diego Moreira is set for a stunning £47.5m move after developing at Strasbourg.

Cobham Next Gen will begin its Premier League 2 season away to Bournemouth on Friday.

The name is new.

The bigger challenge remains the same: turning Chelsea’s next generation into genuine first-team players.
