Lewis-Skelly Transfer News has taken another turn after Metro News reported Wayne Rooney’s call for Manchester United to reconsider the Arsenal teenager. According to the report, Rooney made the case on the Stick to United podcast, where he described the 19-year-old as an “absolute no-brainer” for Michael Carrick.
Metro News says intermediaries previously offered the England international to United and Chelsea for around £45 million, yet neither club initially embraced the proposal. Arsenal’s stance, according to the report, stems from the £75 million arrival of Bruno Guimaraes and the need to generate funds. Rooney believes Lewis-Skelly could cover left-back, where Luke Shaw’s availability remains a concern, while giving United another option in midfield.
‘I don’t think you can rely on Luke Shaw to be consistent for the whole season and that leads me to Myles Lewis-Skelly,’ Rooney said on Stick to United.
‘We’re hearing that he could be available for not that much money, so I think that’s an absolute no-brainer.
‘If you can get a player in who can play left-back and centre-midfield, that’s an absolute no-brainer. He’s young, and he’s got a massive future ahead of him.
‘I would like to see another centre back, another central midfielder and another centre forward, so there’s still a lot of work to be done. But it’s really important that the players they bring in, the club do it right.
‘Arsenal have spent a lot over the last couple of years, so selling Lewis-Skelly makes some sense as it would be pure profit. I don’t think it would be a great look, but I can see why they might sell him.
‘If you’re United and he becomes available, it’s a no-brainer. They definitely need to bring in a left-back; that’s a priority for United.
‘I would like to think there’s more players coming in before the window closes, every fan including me wants to see that. But it’s about getting the right players.
‘Looking at the money that has been spent over the last 10 years, it’s been an absolute disaster and the club are probably still recovering from that.’
Lewis-Skelly Transfer News: why Rooney’s idea makes sense
Rooney’s argument has footballing logic, even if the transfer itself looks fanciful. Lewis-Skelly can shift between left-back and midfield without looking like a makeshift option. England Football currently lists him as having six senior caps and one goal, while Arsenal have tied him down until June 2030. His 2025/26 numbers matter too: 20 Premier League appearances and 10 Champions League appearances.
That versatility would appeal to United, especially with Shaw’s fitness record forcing the club to think about cover. Yet Arsenal’s recent behaviour points in another direction. Lewis-Skelly started the Community Shield against Manchester City on August 16, then supplied the assist for Riccardo Calafiori’s opener in a 3-0 win. Arsenal’s first-team plans clearly still include him.
Crucially, current reporting contradicts any suggestion that Arsenal have decided to cash in, while Lewis-Skelly has continued to play and contribute after Guimaraes joined last week.

I’d take Rooney’s assessment of the player over the transfer prediction. The teenager has been at Arsenal since eight, and his current contract gives the club substantial control. More tellingly, Arsenal CEO Richard Garlick said this week that the club want to retain emerging talents amid the speculation. That makes a sale to United especially hard to picture.

Bruno Guimaraes’ arrival creates midfield pressure, but Arsenal can still use Lewis-Skelly as a left-back, midfielder, or rotational option. His Champions League final start against Paris Saint-Germain last season strengthens that case. United might need another left-back, and Rooney has identified an unusually clean solution, but Arsenal hold the cards unless Lewis-Skelly changes his stance. On the evidence available today, that looks unlikely.
