Nicky Hayen urges Zian Flemming to stay at Burnley amid Everton links

Nicky Hayen has urged Zian Flemming to stay at Turf Moor following his impressive start to the season.

The Dutchman has begun the season with three goals in his first two games, following up his strike in the cup with a brace against West Ham on Sunday.

While Burnley fans were delighted with the 28-year-old’s impact in their side’s Championship opener, his form will only intensify speculation linking him with a return to the Premier League.

Coventry City, Brentford and Leeds United have all previously been linked with the striker, who bagged 11 times in the top flight last term in his debut campaign at that level.

But Everton have now emerged as potential suitors after David Moyes was spotted watching Sunday’s game at Turf Moor.

“It didn't help that he scored two times today!,” Hayen joked after the West Ham game.

“No, but I'm really pleased with his performance and also the way he scored the penalty.

“He scored that second goal and of course Zian is really important, not only with his goals, but also the way he plays for us.

“But as I said, the way we play also suits him, so I think it's the best choice for him to stay, because he can be even more important than before and maybe wait for six months and a half, and during the winter break it can change every time.

“I'm aware of that, but the way he feels, I think he enjoys himself and that's the most important at the moment.”

While Flemming rightly took all the headlines after his late brace, Hayen was keen to praise the entire team effort.

“To score goals you need teammates,” he added. “I think everyone was involved in the game.

“Not only because I subbed Ugo [Raghouber] and Hannibal after 60 minutes, but until the 60th minute we could lead this game, so they did their job.

“This is what we want, we want a squad of 18-20 players who can help each other and we changed the game with the game-changers, the guys who came in, and they did their job.

“This has to be the strength of this team, and then supported by the fans who really showed a lot of engagement. You can build here a fortress, and this is something that I for sure felt, especially in the last 10 minutes.”
