Liverpool have reached a verbal agreement for Curtis Jones‘ move to Inter Milan, with the midfielder set to leave after 16 years in a deal worth £30 million.

Jones will depart Anfield in the coming days after being granted clearance to undergo a medical with Serie A side Inter.

It follows months of speculation and talks over a switch to the San Siro, with the 25-year-old having entered the final year of his contract.

With personal terms already provisionally agreed, Fabrizio Romano reports on X that a deal in the region of €35 million (£30m) is being finalised.

The Scouser was at the AXA Training Centre on Wednesday, but having missed the last two friendlies against Monaco and Como his exit was considered a forgone conclusion.

While there has been a confusion over why Jones was open to leaving his boyhood club, it must also be acknowledged that, after nine seasons around the first team, he was unlikely to ever command a first-choice starting role.

Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch are expected to start the new campaign as Andoni Iraola‘s two-man unit with Florian Wirtz in the No. 10 role.

Alexis Mac Allister is stepping up his fitness work after a late return for pre-season and teenager Trey Nyoni is in line for a promotion having caught the eye over the summer.

Why Liverpool are unlikely to replace Curtis Jones

Liverpool are not considered likely to sign a replacement for Jones, with Nyoni’s progress instead prompting a change of plan for Iraola.

Wataru Endo remains at the club and could be retained as an experienced squad player, while a proposed loan for James McConnell has been put on hold until the end of the window.

There are few genuine contenders to step up from the U21s ranks this season but there are particularly high hopes for U18s midfielders Haydn Murray-Holme, 17, Erik Farkas, 16, and Luca Eden, 15.

The Reds were credited with an interest in Crystal Palace‘s Adam Wharton, Monaco’s Lamine Camara and then-Lens midfielder Mamadou Sangare earlier in the summer but no moves have developed.

Sangare has since joined Brentford for £39 million while Camara is a target for Palace as a potential partner for Wharton.

It is possible that a surprise emerges in the final two weeks of the transfer window, but Liverpool are known to be prioritising additions in attack with Paris Saint-Germain‘s Bradley Barcola their No. 1 target.
