Mikel Brown Jr. is facing steep expectations as the Brooklyn Nets' highest draft choice since their move from New Jersey. The 20-year-old showed promising early returns at Summer League. Brown averaged 15.0 points and 4.0 assists in 21.7 minutes per game across four outings in Las Vegas.
His dynamic offensive skill set was on display as he converted several deep threes and consistently created scoring opportunities for himself and his teammates while driving. Brown also impressed defensively, using his athleticism and 6-foot-7.5 wingspan to bother opposing ball-handlers and create deflections.
Vince Carter recently asked Brown what he wants Nets fans to know about his game entering his rookie campaign.
“I think one – my impact on winning, not really just trying to fill up the stat sheet,” Brown told Carter on the Cousins Podcast with Tracy McGrady. “At the end of the day, it's about plus-minus with me. Like if I'm on the court, are we in the plus? Are we winning the margins? I feel like that's the biggest thing that kind of separates me from everybody else. And some things that I want Nets fans to know are that I'm all about winning. Whether that's me scoring it, whether that's me playmaking, whether that's me being a leader, or if I have to be like all of them. Like, I've taken on that burden.”
“I've been in every situation. I've been the guy. I've been somebody that has to play a role. I've been the superstar on the team. I've had to do just scoring. I've had to do just playmaking. I've literally been through it all. So, I feel like I'm very versatile and diverse when it comes to whatever is needed of me, and that's what I'm going to do. And also on the defensive end, I really feel like people coming into this draft process kept trying to, you know, get at me for my defense, but really didn't go look at the film and see how I guard. I guard the basketball.”
Brown's boasts the most dynamic skill set of a Nets draft pick in decades.

Nets General Manager Sean Marks pointed to Brown's basketball IQ and well-rounded offensive game when discussing the pick.
“Watching [Mikel] play, just how dynamic he is as a playmaker and scorer, the pace at which he plays the game [stood out],” Marks said. “He’s a cerebral player, has really great feel. It’s just exciting to get a guy like that who has some intangible skills as well, when you look at how athletic he is, the speed at which he can play. Those things translate to our league. And then you get to meet the guy. He really has a chip on his shoulder, really has something to prove, and I think those are also some of the things that stood out to us. We watched him way back in his Hoop Summit days, so it’s been nice to follow his progress.”
Following two years of tanking, the Nets will attempt to take a step back towards relevance in 2026-27. Brown enters the season as Brooklyn's projected starting point guard. Barring further offseason moves, he'll join Egor Demin, Michael Porter Jr., Julius Randle and Day'Ron Sharpe in the team's starting five.
