Arsenal begin their Premier League title defence against newly-promoted Coventry City, with Mikel Arteta facing some early selection decisions.
Arsenal kick off their Premier League title defence on Friday night, welcoming newly promoted Coventry City to the Emirates for the 2026/27 curtain-raiser.
Mikel Arteta’s side already have silverware in the cabinet after a convincing 3-0 win over Manchester City in the Community Shield on Sunday. Riccardo Calafiori struck inside the first minute, with Kai Havertz and Martin Odegaard rounding off a statement afternoon in Cardiff.
Coventry couldn’t have asked for a tougher test to mark their reintroduction to the Premier League. A league opener against the champions to mark their return after spending 25 years out of the top flight.
Frank Lampard’s side put on a convincing display as they stormed the Championship last season, finishing nine points ahead of Ipswich having clinched the title with two games to spare.
Coventry also have a recent trend to buck. Each of the last three Championship winners has been relegated from the Premier League the following season. Even if they don’t come away with points, a competitive showing against the champions would at least offer some early signs of encouragement that Lampard’s side could avoid the same fate.

William Saliba and Jurrien Timber continue their absences through injury. Saliba’s return date is still unknown, whilst Arteta acknowledged the Dutch defender is still a few weeks away from playing, despite having returned to the pitch for training.
Cristhian Mosquera performed well alongside Gabriel as the Gunners kept a clean sheet against Manchester City in the Community Shield and will likely be set for a regular starting spot whilst Saliba is injured.
Ben White and Calafiori flanked the centre-back pairing and are set to do the same to start Arsenal’s Premier League season.
Further up the pitch, decisions become more difficult.
Lewis-Skelly and Guimaraes started against Manchester City with great success. However, after his substitution, the £75 million signing was spotted with ice strapped to his thigh on the bench. Whilst Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi both picked up minutes in the second half as they push to return to full fitness following the World Cup.
Myles Lewis-Skelly should be the most match-fit, having played throughout the Gunners’ pre-season; this would allow Arteta to continue to rest two of the remaining three as they build up for the new season. Whilst Martin Odegaard looked back at his best on Sunday, the captain should be set for a start against Coventry, barring any injury issues.
Tzolis has made his case for a start throughout pre-season. Who pairs him on the other wing will depend on Saka’s fitness. Arteta will have a call to make at striker too. Havertz the preferred choice in the Community Shield, but depending on how they view Coventry’s defence, whether Gyokeres’ strength and more clinical finishing could be the best option

Coventry wrapped up pre-season with a 2-0 win over Monaco, Ellis Simms and Loum Tchaouna both on the scoresheet in their last public warm-up.
Lampard has bolstered his squad with some late Premier League experience, bringing in Taiwo Awoniyi from Nottingham Forest on Monday. The striker arrives with 21 goals in 90 top-flight appearances for Forest.
Haji Wright remains a doubt after picking up a quad injury in pre-season, while Jack Rudoni was still regaining fitness ahead of the Monaco match.
Coventry are not just another promoted side looking to sit back and survive. They racked up 97 goals in the Championship last season, at least 15 more than anyone else, and Lampard’s organised 4-2-3-1 brought a direct, high-tempo style. The Sky Blues also offer significant set-piece threat, scoring 29 non-penalty set pieces last season.
What to Expect
Arsenal will likely dominate possession, but Coventry have enough firepower to try and make life difficult for the Gunners on the counter-attack.
Coventry’s direct style and set-piece threat could pose problems for an Arsenal back line still missing Saliba and Timber. If Lampard urges his side to attack early, Arsenal may not get the chance to settle into their usual rhythm.
The bigger question is just how much Arteta will change a side that looked so sharp in the Community Shield.
Rice, Saka and Zubimendi would normally be among the first names on the teamsheet, but all three have only just returned to the group. Lewis-Skelly, Guimaraes and Tzolis, on the other hand, played key roles in what was probably Arsenal’s best display of the summer against Manchester City.
Arteta has plenty of options in midfield and attack, but he’ll be wary of another opening-day slip against a promoted side. Arsenal fans will remember the 2-0 defeat to Brentford at the start of the 2021/22 season.

Arsenal host Coventry City at the Emirates Stadium on Friday, August 21, with kick-off at 8pm BST.
The fixture opens the entire 2026/27 Premier League season.
It will be the clubs’ first league meeting since 2001. Their most recent competitive meeting came in the FA Cup in January 2014, when Arsenal won 4-0 at the Emirates.

Prediction
Coventry have earned plenty of respect with their charge to promotion, and their attacking numbers mean Arsenal can’t afford to treat this opener as a formality.
Even so, Arsenal’s performance in the Community Shield was a statement, and Arteta now has far more depth to call on than he did for much of last season.
