The left-back position is one Pompey are actively looking to strengthen before the transfer window slams shut
John Mousinho has confirmed a left-back is on his wanted list before the transfer window closes on September 1.
The Pompey boss admitted it’s an area of the pitch the Blues’ recruitment team is currently looking to strengthen, amid news that Connor Ogilvie has suffered a setback in his recovery from knee surgery and will be out for a further five weeks following a second operation.
However, Mousinho passed up the option to confirm whether Liverpool defender Luke Chambers is a player he could turn to after reports emerged that Fratton Park could be a loan destination for the 22-year-old.
‘There's a couple of options that we've got,’ said the Blues head coach when asked by The News about his search for a left-back.
‘Things are relatively slow as we wait for a couple of things to develop here and there. But we want to wait for the right player to come in.’
This week Pompey joined QPR and Blackburn Rovers in being credited with an interest in Chambers, who has come through the Reds’ academy ranks.
Rs boss Julien Stephan has since said his interest in the England under-20 international has ended, opening the door for both the Blues and Rovers to make their move for the Preston-born defender who has made four senior appearances for the Anfield outfit.
It’s also understood that Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola wants to leave it late in the window before allowing Chambers to head out on loan.
But when quizzed on whether a move for the defender is something Pompey are actively exploring with less than two weeks of the transfer window remaining, Mousinho declined to comment.
‘I think you know my answer to that,’ he said before adding: ‘No comment’.
Pompey have already added nine new recruits to their ranks over the summer.
Another three are anticipated, but none are expected to arrive in time to face Lincoln on Saturday.
Mousinho added: ‘There’ll be no movement before the weekend.
‘We’re working on plenty on both sides (ins and outs), but there won’t be anything.
‘We’ll be selecting from the same squad, in terms of ins and outs, as we did against QPR.’
