The 2026 summer transfer window saga involving Enzo Fernandez is running out of days, and Chelsea have just given a big clue that he may stay at the club after all.
Fernandez has been open in his desire to leave the club this summer, with Manchester City now the most likely destination if anywhere.
However, up until now no official bid has met Chelsea’s demands, and they currently expect to start the season with the Argentine in their ranks.

Chelsea give biggest hint yet that Enzo Fernandez will stay this summer
Fernandez has been training with Xabi Alonso’s first team, after coming off the bench in their final pre-season friendly against Bayer Leverkusen.
Chelsea have today announced the squad numbers their players will be wearing for the upcoming season, with Fernandez retaining his number eight jersey.
The Blues would surely not be looking to offer one of the most prestigious numbers at the club to a player they have fears will be leaving this summer.

So, with just two weeks left in the window, Chelsea have given an indication that their expectation to continue with Fernandez has merit.
Fellow Argentinian and new signing Valentin Barco has been given the number four shirt, suggesting he will remain in the first team squad this season.
This comes at the expense of Tosin Adarabioyo, who remains strongly linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge this summer.

Fernández at this point is expected to start the opening game of the season against Fulham, likely in place of Reece James from the last friendly.
The club captain could drop into the back three, with Wesley Fofana suspended following his red card at the end of last season.
Even if Chelsea were to part ways with Fernandez now, they will be given a very small amount of time to find a suitable replacement.
This should put them off the idea of parting ways, especially if it is going to be strengthening a direct Premier League rival.
