Reggie Walsh loan: Chelsea Football Club confirmed on 19 August 2026 that 17-year-old midfielder Reggie Walsh will join League One side Wigan Athletic on a season-long loan for the 2026/27 campaign. The club’s official announcement confirmed the deal, presenting it as a deliberate push to give the teenager his first sustained exposure to senior men’s football.
Walsh, who joined Chelsea’s academy at under-8 level, already holds the distinction of being the club’s third-youngest senior debutant after appearing against Djurgarden at 16 during the 2024/25 season. He also featured in the UEFA Champions League last campaign and turned out twice for Xabi Alonso during Chelsea’s 2026 pre-season tour across Asia and Australia. At youth level, Walsh helped the Under-21s finish top of Premier League 2 and was part of the Under-18 side that won the national final.
Chelsea are sending the right player to the right place
This is exactly the loan move Walsh needed, and the timing couldn’t be better. During 2025/26, he clocked a Champions League appearance against AFC Ajax, 25 minutes, 100% pass completion, plus an EFL Cup outing, all while anchoring the U21S across 27 Premier League 2 appearances. He’s already an England Under-18 international, scoring at the 2025 FIFA Under-17 World Cup. The boy has cleared every age-group bar placed in front of him.
Keeping him at Stamford Bridge this season would have been a waste. Alonso’s midfield is stacked with established, world-class operators, and Walsh’s realistic ceiling there was a handful of early cup minutes. PL2 football no longer tests him, full stop.
Wigan Athletic’s reputation for producing Chelsea loanees isn’t accidental. Reece James did exactly this in 2018/19, and that spell defined him. The club handing Walsh the number 10 shirt from day one signals he won’t be a passenger. He’ll have to dictate tempo against physical, low-block League One sides week in, week out.
That’s the kind of grind that exposes technical players ruthlessly, forcing them to adapt or stall.
