Arsenal race to register£50m-plus Ezri Konsa after medical booked

Arsenal face a race to complete Ezri Konsa’s move from Aston Villa in time for the England defender to be available for Friday night’s Premier League opener against Coventry City.

Konsa is expected to undergo his Arsenal medical on Thursday after the clubs reached an agreement worth around £50million plus add-ons.

ReadArsenal reported on Wednesday that Arsenal had reached an agreement with Aston Villa after weeks of negotiations over Mikel Arteta’s priority defensive target.

There is now an additional race to complete the formalities.

Standard Sport reports that Konsa is due to undergo his medical on Thursday, having already agreed personal terms and said his goodbyes to staff and team-mates at Villa.

Ezri Konsa Arsenal debut depends on Thursday registration

Arsenal must have Konsa registered by 12pm on Thursday if he is to be eligible to face Coventry at the Emirates Stadium on Friday night.

Premier League registration would ordinarily be completed by midday on Friday ahead of the weekend, but Arsenal opening their campaign that evening brings their cut-off forward.

The timing leaves little margin for delay when Konsa’s medical is also due to take place on Thursday.

The Telegraph has also reported that the 28-year-old is expected in north London for medical checks after Arsenal agreed a £50m deal with Villa.

Getting him registered would immediately give Arteta another option for the Coventry game.

Arsenal are already without William Saliba and Jurrien Timber, increasing the value of Konsa’s ability to operate at both centre-back and right-back.

There is no guarantee a player completing his medical less than 36 hours before kick-off would immediately start, but simply having him available would strengthen Arteta’s defensive options.

If Arsenal miss Thursday’s registration cut-off, Konsa could still complete his transfer but would have to wait for his debut.

The unusual consequence is that Arsenal’s next Premier League fixture is away at Aston Villa on August 31.

Konsa could therefore make his Arsenal debut against the club he is now preparing to leave.
