Viktor Gyokeres could hardly have asked for a more intriguing opportunity to force his way back to the front of Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal striker hierarchy.
Kai Havertz started ahead of the Sweden international against Manchester City in Sunday’s Community Shield and responded by scoring in a convincing 3-0 victory.
ReadArsenal has already looked at the major Havertz-Gyokeres decision Arteta faces against Coventry.
Friday’s Premier League opener now offers Gyokeres the perfect setting to provide his answer.
It comes against the club where his career in English football truly exploded.
Arsenal facing Coventry means a reunion for Viktor Gyokeres.
Piece on his time at the Sky Blues, with thanks to former captain Liam Kelly.
"Viktor was an absolute monster. At times, he was unplayable."

Viktor Gyokeres returns to the club that transformed his career
Gyokeres scored 43 goals during two-and-a-half years with Coventry before leaving for Sporting CP in 2023.
Former Coventry captain Liam Kelly has now offered an insight into the transformation he witnessed first-hand.
Speaking to The Sun, Kelly described Gyokeres as an “absolute monster” who could be “unplayable” at his best.
Perhaps more interestingly for Arsenal, Kelly recalled how the striker initially spent much of his first six months at Coventry coming from the bench.
Gyokeres returned after signing permanently looking like a different player and eventually scored 21 Championship goals as Coventry reached the 2023 play-off final.
There are obvious differences between that situation and his current one at Arsenal, but the competitive theme feels familiar.
Gyokeres has once again been presented with a challenge for his place.
Kai Havertz has changed the Arsenal striker battle
Gyokeres finished his first Arsenal campaign with 21 goals in all competitions and played a significant role in a title-winning season.
Yet past achievements will not guarantee the starting shirt.
Havertz strengthened his position by scoring against Manchester City after Arteta selected the German to lead the attack ahead of Gyokeres.
Arsenal’s official match report confirmed Havertz doubled the lead in Cardiff as the champions collected the Community Shield.
Arteta therefore has little reason to change simply because a new competition begins.
For Gyokeres, Coventry suddenly becomes more than a reunion.
A strong performance against his former club would give Arteta an immediate reminder of the qualities which made the striker Arsenal’s leading scorer last season.
His physicality could also be particularly useful against a promoted Coventry side likely to spend periods defending deep at the Emirates.
Kelly remembers a striker determined to dominate centre-backs in training and matches.
Arsenal now need that version of Gyokeres again.
Havertz has made the first move in the battle to lead Arteta’s attack this season.
Against the club that helped create him, Gyokeres has an ideal opportunity to respond.
