Wins, the game Klopp had never seen and Rio's record - Liverpool's past five at Newcastle
Recap Liverpool’s last five visits to St. James’ Park ahead of their Premier League opener at Newcastle United on Sunday.
The Reds have had eventful, dramatic and mostly successful experiences in recent trips to Tyneside to meet the Magpies.
Here is a look back at the details…

The Reds arrived in the north east for this lunchtime Premier League kick-off on the last day of April with a quadruple still possible.
Carabao Cup winners, FA Cup finalists, in the midst of a Champions League semi-final and battling Manchester City for the league title, Jürgen Klopp’s men were on a hamster wheel of crucial matches.
But they kept finding, and a professional display guided them past Newcastle here.
A single goal in the 19th minute won it, and it was one composed of brawn and beauty.
James Milner’s firm-but-fair tackle set Liverpool on the attack and Naby Keita combined with Diogo Jota to break into the area.
Keita then sidestepped his way through the home defence and slammed in the ball to keep up the Reds’ trophy pursuit.
February 18, 2023 – Newcastle United 0-2 Liverpool
Nunez (10), Gakpo (17)

A dozen-minute spell early in this encounter effectively settled it in Liverpool’s favour.
Fewer than 10 minutes had elapsed when Darwin Nunez fired an emphatic finish beyond Nick Pope to give the visitors a lead.
Bringing a Trent Alexander-Arnold knock over the top under control, the striker made no mistake by rasping the ball into the net.
Recent new arrival Cody Gakpo prodded in from close range just moments later – benefiting from a majestic Mohamed Salah pass – to consolidate the Reds’ control of the game.
The mountain Newcastle needed to climb grew when Pope was next sent off for handling the ball outside his penalty area.
The home side battled, including hitting the woodwork twice, but the damage was done and the points were Liverpool’s.
August 27, 2023 – Newcastle United 1-2 Liverpool

There’s impacts as a substitute and then there’s what Nunez produced on this late-summer afternoon at St. James’ Park.
At the time of the Uruguayan’s introduction from the bench in this Premier League clash – the 77th minute – the Reds were 1-0 down.
But not only were they trailing to Anthony Gordon’s opener for the hosts, Virgil van Dijk had been sent off during a first half to forget.
A goal to rescue a point would have been plenty sufficient to gladden the hearts of the travelling Kopites high up in the stadium’s stands.
Nunez immediately delivered that – and then even more.
He equalised with 81 on the clock and produced a stunning winner on 90+3, both goals coming via unerring finishes from the right-hand side.
“I think in my 1,000 games as a coach or a manager I never had a game like this,” said Klopp. “Because these moments are rare and super-special.”
December 4, 2024 – Newcastle United 3-3 Liverpool
Isak (35), Gordon (62), Schar (90)

In keeping with the prolific nature of this fixture, there were six goals shared during this eventful night on Tyneside.
Future Reds striker Alexander Isak thumped the Magpies into a first-half lead with an unstoppable strike from distance.
Curtis Jones brought Liverpool level soon after the interval with a near-post finish, only for Gordon to put Newcastle back in front.
Bit between his teeth, Salah brilliantly embarked on a rescue mission for three points that he was so close to achieving.
The Egyptian twice linked up with substitute Alexander-Arnold to propel the Reds into a 3-2 advantage by the 83rd minute.
But the eventual Premier League champions would have to settle for a draw as Fabian Schar met a looping free-kick to equalise at the end.
August 25, 2025 – Newcastle United 2-3 Liverpool
Guimaraes (57), Osula (88)
Gravenberch (35), Ekitike (46), Ngumoha (90+10)

Twelve months ago, it was a bona-fide thriller.
Reigning champions Liverpool appeared to be in control when they went two goals up early in the second half, with Hugo Ekitike adding to Ryan Gravenberch’s long-range opener.
Newcastle were playing with 10 men, too, Gordon having been sent off in added time of the first half.
But the home team fought back. Bruno Guimaraes halved their deficit and substitute William Osula then levelled at the end of normal time.
Still, there was another twist.
With 90+10 showing on the clock, a slick Liverpool passing move worked the ball to an unmarked Rio Ngumoha at the back post.
Aged 16 years and 361 days, the forward planted a perfect finish across goal and into the corner to win the game and become the Reds’ youngest ever scorer in the process.
