Chelsea land surprise windfall after record€66m transfer

Chelsea are set to receive a surprise transfer windfall after former Blues winger Diego Moreira completed a record move from Strasbourg to AC Milan worth up to €66million.

Milan officially announced Moreira’s arrival on Wednesday, with the Belgium international signing a contract until June 2031.

Fabrizio Romano reports Strasbourg will receive €50m guaranteed plus another €16m in potential add-ons for the 22-year-old.

Chelsea will not simply be watching the remarkable rise of their former player from afar.

talkSPORT reports that the Blues included a sell-on clause when Moreira moved permanently to Strasbourg in 2024 and are now in line for a meaningful payment.

The exact percentage Chelsea will receive has not been disclosed.

Chelsea benefit from Diego Moreira transfer

Moreira’s latest move completes an extraordinary increase in his value since leaving Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea originally signed the winger from Benfica on a free transfer in 2023, but he managed only one senior appearance before departing for Strasbourg the following year.

ReadChelsea reported earlier this week that Moreira was closing in on a huge Milan move, with the deal providing another example of a young player’s value increasing significantly within BlueCo’s Strasbourg operation.

The final package is even larger than initially reported.

Moreira developed from a raw winger into a versatile wide player in France and has now become Strasbourg’s record sale.

His arrival in Italy could also have consequences elsewhere in Chelsea’s transfer planning.

ReadChelsea reported on Wednesday that Rafael Leao’s Milan future has come under renewed scrutiny following the Italian club’s investment in Moreira.

Chelsea cannot claim Moreira’s development as a direct Stamford Bridge success.

They can, however, now benefit financially from a player they allowed to leave two years ago, while Strasbourg bank a potentially enormous profit.

For BlueCo, Moreira’s €66m package provides perhaps the clearest example yet of how valuable the Strasbourg pathway can become.
