Kieran Morrison has left Liverpool for a season-long loan at Sheffield Wednesday, with the 19-year-old turning down higher-level interest to head to League One.

Morrison was subject of enquiries from clubs in Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and the Championship as he weighed up one of the biggest decisions on his young career.

But the winger, who impressed during Liverpool’s pre-season tour, has opted to join Sheffield Wednesday, a side relegated to League One last season.

This Is Anfield understands the deciding factor was the offer of consistent first-team football, which was not guaranteed elsewhere.

Liverpool and Sheffield Wednesday have now confirmed the agreement after Morrison underwent a medical on Wednesday and immediately joined training with Henrik Pedersen’s side.

He will be on the bench for the Owls’ first home game of the campaign against Bradford City on Thursday night, with over 32,000 tickets sold for the South Yorkshire club.

Morrison, of course, is already up to speed after spending pre-season under Andoni Iraola.

“It’s been so intense compared to previous seasons,” he said while with Liverpool’s first team in America.

“I’ve not been really around it, but from what everyone’s telling me as well and what I’ve seen, it’s been so intense.

“There’s been double sessions, my legs have been finished by like 9pm! So, the intensity, what Andoni’s brought is very high.”

Morrison captained Liverpool U21s last season, with head coach Rob Page remarking on the change in attitude he saw in a player who was previously “class clown.”

Taking the armband saw him not only step up in terms of responsibility, but also performance, with the teenager setting a new club record for league goals in a single season with the U21s.

Liverpool were eager to tie Morrison down to a new deal this summer, and after protracted talks a breakthrough was eventually reached and he signed an improved contract to 2030.

Now he will be given his first real taste of senior football week in, week out, in a league which will test his physicality along with his proven technical ability.

Sheffield Wednesday began their time back in League One with a 2-1 win away to Leyton Orient and are among the favourites to earn promotion to the Championship.
